In this lesson students will be able to learn the difference between the present simple and present continuous and they will practice in small groups sharing their pictures for special days in their lives

Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson the students will be able to differentiate between the present simple and continuous tense

  • By the end of this lesson students will be able to speak about special days or events in their life thriugh sharing some photos with their friends

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T shows the Ss two pictures , then asks about : "The difference between the two pictures ? and what do you think the girl (Jess) is celebrating in both of them ?" -T helps the Ss to know the difference between the two pictures and that Jess is celebrating her birthday in both of them -T asks the Ss about " what do they usually do in their birthdays ? and who do they celebrate with ?" -T asks the Ss to answer the same questions in pairs with adding more details if they wanted as the place -Ss share their answers with the T -T asks the Ss to look at the picture in the book page 8 , then try to guess " who is Jess celebrating with in her birthday ?" -T tells the Ss the right answer (with her friends ) if the Ss couldn't guess the right answer

Test #1 (1-2 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

-T tells the Ss about Jess' conversation with her colleague as she is showing her some photos of her birthday party last weekend -T asks the Ss to look at the conversation between Jess and her colleague and try to fill in the gaps with the suitable verbs (in present simple or continuous) -T asks the Ss "if they are going to say the answer or write it down ?if they are going to work alone or in pairs ?" and then tells the Ss about their time -T asks the Ss to check their answers together in pairs - Ss share their answer with the T to check them with her

Teach (6-8 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

-T writes on the board some sentences while checking the answers with the Ss as : 1-Lydia is working in a diy shop at the moment 7 joe is wearing sunglasses. 4 She always pulls faces in photos. -T asks the Ss about theses sentences as in the first sentence , does it mean that lydia worked in the past or she is working now ? and then the same questions for the second sentence -T asks CCQs through drawing a time line and asking the Ss if the verbs in the first two examples are happening exactly now or before now or after now ? -T asks the Ss to give examples for somethings they are doing now . -T elicits the form from the Ss by asking them to take 10 seconds to think of the form of these two examples (subject + verb be + ing +...) -T asks the Ss about the verb be in the two sentences , " if the subject is (I or They) ,will verb be here change or not ? -T asks the Ss about the last example no.7 to elicit it's meaning , if she is pulling her face now or always ? so this is a habit she has when she takes photos ? -T asks the Ss to give examples for somethings they always do or it's a habit for them -T elicits the form by asking the Ss how form a sentence in this tense (subject + verb+..) -T asks the Ss "if we changed the subject (she)in the last example to (they) ,will the rest of sentence (pulls her face ) be right or it will need to changed to another thing ?" -T clarifies that with the subjects ( he ,she ,it ) the verb + (s,es,ies) and if the subject is (i, we , they . you ) the verb infinitive -T drills with the Ss the three sentences

Test #2 (2-3 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

-T asks the Ss to do the exercise on page 133 in the book as the Ss read the text and choose the correct answer -T asks the Ss "if they are going to work alone with a partner ? , then tell them about the time for this activity -T asks the Ss to check their answers in pairs -Ss share their answers with the T to check them with her

Free practice (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-T asks the Ss to find a photo for people they know or meet a lot celebrating a special day or event in their life and say who are these people -T asks the Ss to work in groups tell other students what the people in the picture are doing and what do usually do when you celebrate with each other -T ask the Ss if they are going to write down their answers or speak with their group ?, if they are going to talk about their family or the people in the photos ? , and then tells the Ss about the time -T monitors the Ss while doing the activity to write down their mistakes and then give them feedback when they finish
