Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with an opportunity to practice and/or develop their writing skills, specifically their essay writing skills.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a essay in the context of scanning a particular text to develop an opinion. Making use, specifically, of functional language to elaborate said essay.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will begin the lesson by showing in Google Slides pictures of plastic bags in different contexts, followed bythe next questions: -Have you ever used plastic bags? -Are they convenient for you? -Are you ok with banning them?

Sample Analysis (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Using a pdf and sharing my screen, I shall ask one of the students to read it for the rest of the class. Followed by a couple CCQs: -Is the writer in favor or against the banning of plastic bags? -Is the essay backed by factual evidence? After that we shall go to Google Jamboard for a quick matching activity to check the basic structure of an essay (intro, body and conclussion), as well as the kinds of essays. We shall also be revising on Google Slides he meaning and form of ceartain examples of formulaic language they can use for writing an opinion essay: In my opinion, I completely agree, I don't think anyone would disagree with that, I'm not sure I quite agree, I beg to differ, I'm not sure that.

Writing Task (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

In this section, the Ss will write a personal opinion on the same topic as the template that was previously shown. We shall be using padlet for this exercise , where they'll find the previously revised formulaic language for them to remember.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

I shall be revising some of the Ss' essays and giving feedback on their structure and adequate use of the formulaic language. Also pointing out any errors I might've found.
