Description

In this lesson the student learn and practice third and mixed conditionals through PPP. The lesson starts with a discussion about Facebook. Then the students read a short text about Facebook in which the student is exposed to third and mixed conditional sentences. Next, the teacher highlight/present the grammatical rules and finally students do some controlled and freer exercises to practice the language.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher shows the student the logo of Facebook and elicits from the student which internet company it belongs to. Then, the teacher writes some follow up questions about Facebook on the board and and gives the student one minute to answer the questions from her own knowledge. Q) what kind of website is it? A) It's a social networking website Q) who invented Facebook? A) Mark Zuckerberg Q) when was Facebook invented? A) February 4, 2004 Then, the teacher gives the student a short text about Facebook to check her answers.

Exposure (2-3 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

The teacher writes the following sentences on the board and ask the student to read the text and complete the sentences. If Facebook hadn't been invented, Zuckerberg.......... ............. ............. billions of dollars. if Facebook hadn't been invented, we........... ............ able to find and contact our friends. In the feedback, the student shares the answers with the teacher and the teacher writes the answers on the board.

Clarification (4-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The teacher focuses the student's attention on the the first question and ask the following questions: DId Mark Zukerberg invent the Facebook? Yes Did he make billions of dollars? Yes Is this real or we are imagining? we are imagining Is this about the present or the past? past Then, the teacher, elicits or explains the form: Third conditionals: if+ past perfect, sub+would+past participle Then the teacher focuses the student's attention on the second sentence and asks the following questions: Did mark Zuckerberg invent the Facebook? Yes Can we contact our friends now? Yes Is the first part of the sentence about the present or the past? past Is the second part of the sentence about the present or the past? present Is this real or are we imagining? we are imagining Then the teacher elicits or explains the form Mixed conditionals: If+past perfect, subject+would+base form of the verb

Controlled Practice (2-3 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The teacher gives the student a worksheet containing a gap filling exercise. The student will fill the gaps either with the third conditional or mixed conditional. Then the teacher provides the student with the answer key.

Semi-Controlled Practice (3-4 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

The student is given a worksheet containing hypothetical situations. The student is asked to write one third conditional and one mixed conditional sentence for each situation. The fist exercise has been done as an example. The teacher helps and support the student if necessary.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The teacher asks the student to talk about the best and worst decision she has ever made. Then, she uses the third conditional or mixed conditional to make sentences about what would have happened if she had made a different decision or what would be different in his life now. The teacher gives her an example from his own personal life to demonstrate the activity.
