Description

In this lesson, students learn and practice the different sections of a postcard and the language used. First, students will read and analyze a writing sample. Then, they will practice writing and receive feedback.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide process writing practice of a postcard in the context of holidays

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a postcard in the context of travel
  • To provide clarification, review and practice of openings and closings in the context of informal writing

Procedure

Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T tells students to discuss the question, "What was your favorite vacation? Why?" in groups of 2-3 in breakout rooms for 3 minutes T demos example response Ss discuss in breakout rooms (3 min) T nominates some Ss as necessary to share answers to lead-in question (2 min)

Text Analysis (11-12 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading

T tells Ss they will complete Task 1 individually for 2 minutes T shares link to presentation and Task 1 through chat Ss complete Task 1 (2 min) T and Ss review answer as whole group, justifying choices (1 min) T reviews structure and language of postcard with Ss with aid of CCQs

Productive Task (12-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

T tells Ss to write a postcard individually for 6 minutes in breakout rooms using checklist as reference Ss write postcards (6 min) Ss return; T tells Ss to send their postcard to their assigned partner using checklist for 4 minutes T demos conducting feedback through checklist on sample Ss conduct feedback individually using checklist (4 min)

Feedback and Error Correction (9-11 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T tells students to discuss feedback with partner in breakout rooms for 4 minutes T demos discussing feedback Ss discuss feedback in breakout rooms (4 min) Ss return; T conducts DEC T answers any questions on material
