In this lesson Ss will be working on their reading skill by practicing it through a text in the context of "tipping" . I'm going to set the context and create interest in the topic of the reading by a conversation. I will pre_teach some vocabulary for them and then the class wil continue by a gist activity. In this activity Ss are going to match some pictures whit the reading's paraghraphs. Afterward i will divide them in tow groups and they are going to focus on the detailed activity. Finaly the class will be finished by a speaking activity .

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about "tipping"

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a debate in the context of "tipping in Iran"


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

This is a lead_in activity to create interest in the topic of the lesson. I will start this receptive skill lesson by a conversation about "tipping". 2 students will come to the board and play a role based on the conversation.Afterward other students should explain that what can they understand from the conversation.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

In this stage i'm going to pre_teach some vocabulary. Here are the words that i'm going to pre_teach them: ( Tip_Check_Porter_Maid) I will elicit the words "porter" and "maid" by drama. I will elicit the word "check" by drawing. Then i will write the words on the board afterward i'm going to model and drill them in class (M/F/P).Then i'm going to ask the meaning of the words from Ss.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I'm going to divide the Ss into two groups . After that i will ask them to just read the text individually and silently in 2 minute . Then i will give them a HO of 3 different pictures and i will instruct them to just match the pictures with the correct paragraphs. Afterward we are going to check them together and Ss should explain their reason .

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

As a kind of scanning activity frist of all Ss are going to scan the text. I provide some true,false sentences on separet sheets of paper and also i provide 2 packets for each group that one of them belongs to false sentences and the other one is for true sentences. Now Ss should put the suitable sentence in the suitable packet . After that i will give them the answer key and each group should check another group's answer.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Eventually the class will be finished by a speaking activity and Ss are going to speak about these questions: 1_is tipping customary in Iran? 2_where do Iranian people usually tip ?
