Main Aims

  • To introduce and practice adjectives/nouns (suffixes) to talk about business and trade.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice on the specific suffixes used to form adjectives and nouns.
  • To provide speaking practice.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

First, students look at the picture and try to guess what city is pictured there (the answer is Shanghai). Then they have to say what they know about China/Shanghai regarding the following aspects: languages, life and business. This is all to introduce the text regarding business in China/Shanghai and let students get engaged into the process.

Exposure and highlighting-text work (10-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students read the text and decide, which part of speech are the words in blue: noun for a person, noun for a thing/an idea or adjective. They do it in breakout rooms; OCFB together.

Clarification - MFPA (12-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Students discover the form for themselves by filling in the table where they have to make up the missing words, equivalent to the existing one from the text which belong to a different part of speech. OCFB After that the pronunciation of the words is drilled, the word stress in particular. At the end the conclusion is made on which suffixes represent which part of speech; also their meaning.

Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

After checking the meaning of the suffixes, students have to do an adapted exercise from the WorkBook, page 36 where they have to fill in the gaps with the newly formed words applying the knowledge on suffixes they got in class. They do it in breakout rooms. OCFB.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students work in pairs discussing Mexico and China. They have to compare these two countries using new vocabulary they worked with in class. After working in breakout rooms, students share their ideas as a class. After that DEC of the class conducted by the teacher.
