In this lesson we elicit Ss to practice functional language related to making suggestions and to discussing problems


Main Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for making suggestions and discussing problems in the context of making improvements to Paradiso Coffee Bar

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a debate in the context of functional language


Warmer/Lead-in: What are suggestions? (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students: We need to submit suggestions to the owner

We need to submit each group's suggestions and possible problems to the owner of the Paradiso Coffee Bar for remodeling and redecorating. T - What is a suggestion? T - Do you use different expressions to suggest things than to order request or demand? T - I want you to go into BoR and discuss suggestions or possible problems you would like to bring to the owner's attention. 4 minutes.

Gist to introduce TL (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text and image

Go to BoR and read the text. Then discuss how you would make suggestions or discuss problems with the owner of the bar

Language preparation: Typical suggestions and problem discussion (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Go to BoR and fill in the form using the correct meaning, suggestion and problem discussion form and appropriate treatment of the bar owner. - Notice any pronunciation problems and bring them back so we discuss them. 6 minutes

Controlled Practice: Suggestiions and problem discussion functions (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice
