Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, practice and review of the Past Simple verb tense

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide a speaking practice for fluency development

Procedure

Lead-in and Exposure (10-10 minutes) • To set lesson context, activate prior knowledge and engage students

At the beginning of the class, T shows the photo of the famous Mexican-American actress Salma Hayek and asks Ss if they know who she is. After that, T introduces "Truth or Lie" game presenting Past Simple thought the text. After taking a couple of minutes to review the facts from Salma Hayek's life, Ss are expected to show with the thumbs up/down if they think that those facts are correct or incorrect. Once all the 5 statements are reviewed, T asks Ss to identify the verbs in the past in the sentences they have previously reviewed. The second part of the exercise consists in completing Salma Hayek's biography with the verbs in Past Simple (Ss are given the infinitive forms). Once Ss are finished, T divides them into pairs to compare their answers and later provides them with an efficient open class feedback.

Clarification (MFP) (10-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language (Past Simple)

T uses Google Slides to elicit Ss' knowledge based on CCQs for the Past Simple verb tense. After that, T reviews and provides some practice for affirmative, negative and interrogative forms of the Past Simple verb tense. Finally, T emphasises and drills the pronunciation of -ed endings of regular verbs and recycles the previously taught topic of -ed endings of adjectives to express feelings.

Controlled Practice (10-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T. provides instructions for a controlled practice exercise on the Past Simple verb tense. This practice consists in unscrambling sentences in Past Simple taken from the biography of the first female astronaut Valentina Tereshkova (p.138 of the course book). Before Ss work on the task, T uses an ICQ asking Ss what they are expected to do. On Google Forms, Ss write the unscrambled sentences and later review their answers in pairs using private messages on Zoom. After that, there is an open class discussion of the answers.

Free Practice (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language (Past Simple)

T. instructs Ss to work in pairs or groups of 3 using breakout rooms function on Zoom. Ss need to ask and answer questions about the facts from their own past using the Past Simple verb tense. T. provides a list of questions to choose from and her own example based on her past (thus giving a short demonstration of what is expected from Ss). T monitors the process visiting the virtual rooms on Zoom (using breakout rooms function).

Feedback and Delayed Error Correction (5-5 minutes) • To provide learners with feedback on the completion of the task and language

T. asks Ss what they learnt during the class. T. provides a delayed error correction on the tasks, especially the final one.
