In this grammar lesson, students review the past simple tense through guided discovery based on the biography of Felix Baumgartner who broke skydiving world records.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will have had clarification on the meaning, form and pronunciation of past simple in the context of Felix Baumgartner's biography, and practiced this in a controlled and freer exercise.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of describing their most memorable trip.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will use Google Jamboard to show a visual of Felix Baumgartner and ask students if they know the man in the picture. T will then give Ss the name of the man and ask them to do a web-quest and look for "3 facts about Felix Baumgartner". Students will have 3 min for this part of the activity. T will then ask Ss to share their findings with the class. T will write down the sentences on a shared board so all Ss can see them. Question on the board: Find 3 facts about Felix Baumgartner.

Exposure (4-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T will share a fill in the gaps exercise on the Google Jamboard with the Ss and ask Ss to complete it individually. They would have 2 minutes for this part. The T will ask the Ss to check their answers in pairs (using breakout rooms). Ss will have 1 min for peer-checking. OCFB would take place only checking the answers. This should take 1 min. 1. He __was__(be) born on 20th April 1969. 2. He __needed__(need) the help of a psychologist in order to wear his spacesuit. 3. In 1999, everyone _watched_(watch) him _set_(set) the world record for the highest jump from a building. (Petronas Towers in Malaysia, then the world's highest building.) 4. From the time he _decided_(decide), to the time he did the space dive, it _took_(take) him 7 years. 5. He _married_(marry) his girlfriend, Nicole Oetl, the year after the space dive. 6. He _enjoyed_(enjoy) skydiving a lot. 7. He _didn't sleep_(not sleep) the night before his space dive.

Clarification (8-13 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Clarification would take place while checking the answers for the exposure task. T will elicit the meaning, form and pronunciation of each verb from the Ss. Overall questions asked for clarifying MFP: 1. What is the meaning of ________? 2. The verb ________ is in which tense? past, present or future? 3. Is the action still continuing? 4. Is the action finished? 5. Where do we put the stress for _________ ? 6. Let's practice saying ________ together. 7. Individual drilling from Ss. The following verbs are based on the answers of the gist task in the exposure section: (additional CCQs which are asked for clarification are written below each verb plus the pronunciation) 1. to be What is the form we use for third person? Controlled Practice (6-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T will ask Ss to work in paris and ask about the things that are written below, beginning the question with "When did you last...?" and then changing the statement into past simple and asking their team mate. T will do the first statement with the Ss as an e.g. after the example T will ask ICQs in order to see if the students have understood the task. 1. go on a journey 2. send a text 3. go to a wedding 4. see an amazing view 5. make or watch a YouTube video Ss will have 4 min for this activity. Answers shared through OCFB, T nominates Ss.

Free Practice (6-9 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T will ask Ss to describe their most memorable trip, in groups, stating why it was their most memorable trip. The question would also be written on the board for the Ss to see. Ss will have 4 min for this activity. Question to be written on board Describe your most memorable trip, say why? T will monitor the Ss during their discussions. T will carry out a DEC afterwards
