Description

In this lesson students learn about the Past Continuous through a reading about a man stuck on an elevator. After some gist reading, students will look for the different uses of the Past Continuous in the text, followed by some short pre-teaching about the grammar and its form. Students will then do some controlled practice and finish the class with some Free Practice

Materials

Main Aims

  • To introduce and practice past Progressive

Subsidiary Aims

  • Reading Comprehension
  • To provide accuracy

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Briefly share my own experiences being stuck in elevators then ask the students about theirs. "Have you ever been stuck in an elevator? What happened? How long? Who would you like to be stuck in an elevator with? Who would you hate to be stuck with?"

Gist Text (4-5 minutes) • Students read the text for gist

In Break-Out Rooms students take the following events from the text then put them in the correct order. A. He took out his wallet and read the back of a football match ticket. B. White goes out for a cigarette break C. He pulled the button out so that the alarm rang continuously D. The lift suddenly stopped between floors. E. A voice on the intercom asked, ‘Is someone in there? After some peer to peer feedback we'll go over the activities as a class.

Highlighting (4-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Introduce students to the Grammar with slide 5 on the TP3 Presentation. Ask students to find other examples of this in the text. Do the first as a class and let them find the other 4 on their own. 1. He was working late at the office... 2. … while White was returning to his office on the 43rd floor. 3. ….nobody was working. 4. Why wasn’t the lift working? 5. Why was nobody answering?

Clarification (4-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Use the sentences from the previous activity and use CCQs to guide students to the Meaning, Form, and Pronunciation of each sentence.

Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students go to the Google Forms link and use the hints to make complete sentences in the Past Continuous Form. Model the first one as a class so that students understand what to do. Use ICQs to assess their understanding of instructions. Peer to peer feedback after a few minutes then we go over as a class.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Give students link and have them go to slide 10 which has a series of questions for them to answer. Model satisfactory and unsatisfactory responses so that they know what is expected of them and they don't give 1 word answers. Go around different Break Out rooms listening for Mistake sentences or any groups that might need help or further explanation.

Feedback and Delayed Error Correction (4-5 minutes) • to briefly review and summarize aims of class and provide error correction

Ask students what we talked about in class today. Elicit, "Past Continuous". Write some Mistake sentences then provide the corrections. Leave room for Questions. Dismiss class
