Description

In this lesson, students practice fluency speaking through the context of apologizing

Materials

Main Aims

  • to introduce and provide practive of speaking for fluency in the context of apologizing

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of apologizing
  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about apologizing in the context of ruining a party

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will screenshare Jamboard with lead in question "When was the last time you had to apologize?" Ss will write some examples from their personal life on the jamboard using sticky notes. (1 min) T will elicit personal anecdotes from 1-2 Ss (2 min)

Context (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T will go to Jamboard Page 2 and instruct Ss to read the text and answer the questions on Jamboard page 3 by posting post it notes. (3-4 min) T will go over gist question and CCQ: What happened at Trevor's party? (1-2 min)

Clarification (12-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T will screenshare the MFPA Guided Discovery Task and instruct Ss on how to answer. T wil use ICQs to ensure understanding. (1min) Ss will work in groups to answer the questions (group 1 will take first pair of slides. Group 2 will take 2nd pair of slides). (3-4 min) T will conduct OCFB on all 4 slides. (2 min) Appropriacy: T will go over formal/informal by eliciting responses from Ss (2 min) Pronunciation: T will go over inflection for 2 sentences. T will model and highlight that "I'm so sorry" can be sarcastic and- "I'm sorry but..." can be aggressive by eliciting from Ss. After modeling, some possible CCQs: Does that sentence sound neutral? No What do you think is the tone? Sarcastic, aggressive (3 min)

Controlled Practice (6-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T will share link to Practice Wheel and give a demo on how to use it (click the center and use the prompt to pick your scenario). Ss will take turns in their groups to practice making apology statements. (2 min) Ss will work in groups and practice with each other.(4 min) T will elicit a response from 1-2 Ss (1 min)

Freer Practice (9-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T will instruct Ss to use practice wheel again, but this time, to do more roleplay and respond to each other. (1min) Ss will work on freer practice in same groups. (5-6 min) T will conduct OCFB and elicit responses from Ss. (2min)

Delayed Error Correction (1-2 minutes) • To clarify any mistakes heard during the lesson
