Description

In this lesson students will be introduced to the present simple negative form through guided discovery based on the reading text about the New Year's day. The lesson starts with a video as a lean-in to the topic. After that a group mingle activity will follow in order to introduce the context of the text. Later on students will do activities regarding skimming and detailed readings. At the end students will be introduced to present simple negative form followed my grammar exercise and semi-controlled speaking activity that involved TL.

Procedure

Lead - in (2-3 minutes) • To introduce the context of the lesson

Show the video of the New Year's celebration in London. Elicit info about the New Year: "What celebration this is?" "When is the New Year?" "Do all the countries in the world -China, India, Russia, Saudi Arabia, France - celebrate the New Year on the 1st of January?"

Pre-reading (5-7 minutes) • To introduce the key words and the subject of the text before reading it

Chest HO1 T: match the pictures with the dates. Find out when different countries celebrate the New Year. Find your partner. Hand out one picture/date per student face down. Start. T monitors and gives hints if necessary. After students have found their partners T: "Those who have New Year in January - please sit down here. Chinese New Year - over here please. Indian New year - here. And last group - here." T points at first group: Which country do you have and when does it celebrate the New Year?" T asks all 4 groups T: Why different countries celebrate the New year at different time?" Elicit word "calendar". Later - calendar flash card

Skim Reading (3-5 minutes) • To introduce students to the text

Chest HO2 Now you will read the text very fast, just for 1 min. T gives HO2 face down, "Do not look!" Open the paper and start reading STOP (clap hands) Now, please open the paper like this (demo) and fold the text like this (demo) WCFB On WB: Western countries, Latin American countries, South Asia, Islamic countries T: Does the text mention Western countries? Etc.(point to text) Elicit answers from students.

Reading for detail (7-8 minutes) • Read to find the answers to the questions

Chest HO3 You have 6 questions, Read the text and write the answers. On WB - Which calendar has twelve months? Elicit answer - Gregorian calendar ICQ - Will you write the answers? PW - check answers WCFB - T gives answer key - check your answers, Who made no mistakes?

Test 1 (3-4 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the present simple negative form

Chest HO4 On WB don't / doesn't Please circle the correct answer. ICQ - Will you read or circle the correct answer? PW - check WCFB - give 3 markers to 3 students and ask to write the answers

Teach (2-3 minutes) • To introduce the negative form of the past simple

on WB - Present simple negative form 1 / 2 + 3 Chest HO5 discuss in your groups and find 3 papers that are correct. S works in 4 groups WCFB - T points at 1 on WB and asks groups to show which paper they chose. T sticks the papers on WB Leave this grammar on WB for the next activity

Test 2 (7-10 minutes) • Check students use of the target language

Chest HO6 Read the text and fill in the gaps. on WB They__________(use) the moon calendar. they__________(not use) the sun calendar. Elicit what they will write Monitor when S are about to finish, Now you will listen and check the answers. ICQ Will you listen and check alone or in pairs? listen once, if needed - twice. PW - check in pairs WCFB - on WB number 1-6 Now please come and write the answers (T doesn't say who comes, lest the class to decide)

Semi-controlled speaking (7-10 minutes) • To encourage the students to use TL

on WB draw structure of HO7 Chest HO7 T - this is a picture of (elicit). Your question starts with DO YOU... (elicit possible questions and write on WB). Demo T comes to S "Do you like spiders?" S "No I don't like spiders." on WB - like spiders T "Why don't you like spiders?" S "Because they are ugly" on WB - they are ugly ICQ - will you be writing the answers? Take your pencils, stand up and make two lines facing each other. T gives HO7. Start. T monitors. Delayed error correction on WB WCFB - T points at S and asks other S to give info about that S from their HO
