Main Aims

  • To provide review, clarification and practice of relative clauses in the context of talking about famous people, places and things.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of the correct form of the relative clauses and the use of relative pronouns.
  • To provide clarification of defining and non-defining relative clauses.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows on Jamboard seven pictures of famous people and elicits SS to say whay they know know about them. T gives SS an example with a short sentence by introducing the use of some words with relative clauses.T asks SS provide any information about people of the pictures. T asks SS some CCQs to introduce them to the topic: "What we use to give information about someone or something?", "We use this to combine clauses without repeting information". SS answer the questions. T conducts OCFB. 5 minutes.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning and form of the target language for coming productive tasks.

T shows on Jamboard the form of Relative Clauses and provide two sentences in order to explain the meaning and types of Relative Clauses. T elicits SS with a guide discovery to understand by themselves the target of language. CCQs will be asked here: "Which sentence provides essential and which one extra information about Davi's mother?", "Which sentence uses a relative pronoun?", "Which sentence uses the comma?", "Which sentence is formal and which one is informal?". The whole class, found the type of relative clause for each sentence. T asks SS work in pairs in breakout rooms in order to reinforce the meaning of relative pronouns for coming productive tasks. T conducts OCFB and check the answers. 10 minutes.

Controlled practice (18-20 minutes) • To provide students the opportunity to practice the target language.

T shares SS a worksheet on Google Docs to be completed in pairs in breakout rooms. The exercise is a text which has to be completed by writing in relative pronouns. T conducts OCFB to review the answers. 8 minutes. T provides SS another worksheet for more controlled practice, in pairs in breakout rooms, SS will match and write sentences containing a relative clause (defining or non-defining). T conducts OCFB to review the answers. 8 minutes.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language.

T shows SS a Speaking task to be worked in pairs. SS have to describe their favorite city using the language of the lesson: relative clauses. SS discuss in breakout rooms for 3 minutes. T conducts OCFB and feedback. 7 minutes.
