Grammar Lesson
Upper-intermediate level

Description

At the beginning of the class, as part of the lead-in the students will have a questionnaire about sleep deprivation. Then they will have a test of the grammar point that will be soon clarified and reviewed. Afterwards, I will review the rules of 'used to, be used to, get used to' for the students. Then, they will do an exercise about the same target language. Finally, they will discuss the results of the questionnaire for a speaking fluency practice.

Materials

Abc Questionnaire

Abc Test 2

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of 'used to, be used to, get used to' in the context of sleep

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of sleep deprivation

Procedure

Lead-in (6-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will take turns to interview each other with a questionnaire titled "Are you sleep deprived". They will do it in pairs. They will ask for and give as much as information as they can. They will circle the answers that best describe their partner. After the pairs have finished the questionnaire, they will wait for the end of the lesson for the answers and when they get the answers, they will discuss the results.

Test #1 (4-6 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

The students will have a test on the target language. They will match four sentence beginnings with their endings. They will do it individually. Then they will check in pairs. Afterwards I will give them answer key.

Teach (8-10 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

I will review the rules of the target language for the students. I will give the differences between 'used to' and ' being used to/get used to'. I will use concept checking questions. I will give the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language.

Test #2 (6-8 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

As part of the TTT technique, after the teaching stage, I will give the students another test for further controlled practice exercises. They will check in pairs and I will give them an answer key. Having hopefully learnt from their correction and having their awareness raised further in the teach stage, the students should do the exercises better.

Free practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will give the students the results of the questionnaire that they did at the beginning of the class. After they get the results and learn whether they are sleep deprived or not, they will discuss the results in pairs. Then we will have a WC FB.

Delayed feedback and error correction (2-4 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

I will write on the board both the good and bad language use that I've come across during monitoring. I will do WC error correction
