History of sandwich
Elementary, A1 level

Description

In this lesson, Ss will read a text on the history of the sandwich. I'll start the lead-in by asking them "What's the most famous sandwich in İzmir?" and if necessary showing the Ss the picture of a kumru sandwich, then asking them questions about what they know about kumru, who found it and if they like it or not. I'll make a quick pre-teach vocabulary by giving them hand-outs for matching the pictures with the words. Then the Ss will do scanning for specific information. After that they will do reading for deatiled information and answer T/F quesitons. At the end the Ss will discuss using the target language.

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about founders of sandwich in the context of history of sandwich

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of sandwiches.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I'll ask the Ss to name the most famous sandwich in Izmir and hopefully they will say "kumru" and we'll talk about what's in it, who found it, whether they like it or not.

Pre-Reading (10-13 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The Ss will do a matching exercise using the cut-ups before the reading to be introduced with the target language. Then for the feedback Ss will come to the board and match them with the pictures.I will check with CCQs. After they learned the necessary vocabulary for the reading, we'll move on to scanning for specific information.

Prediction (1-2 minutes) • To prepare the students for the reading text by stimulating schemata.

I will show them a short videoclip about sandwich and will give them the task to think what the video is about and how can they relate the video with the reading text we're going to read.

While-Reading #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The Ss will scan the text to find specific names inside the text. They will work alone and then check their answers with their peers. We'll do a W/C F/B.

While-Reading #2 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Students will read the text again for the second time for detail and answer th T/F questions by working alone. Then they will check their answers with their peers and after that I will give them the answer key. I will go through each false statements and ask the students why the statements are false and what it should have been to check if they understood the reading.

While reading #3 (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

The students will read the text again for detail and complete the half sentences in exercise 3. Then we'll do a whole class feedback.

Post-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss will talk about the context of the lesson using the target language-the words they learned in the pre-teach vocabulary section (spice, recipe, ham, beef, recipe, supper, nuts, mustard). I will be monitoring during the discussion for delayed the feedback afterwards.
