Description

In this lesson students will learn reported speech through text based exercises, speaking activities and language analysis.

Materials

Abc Jamboard slides, google docs form and Zoom.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Reported speech in the context of Gossip/conversation and news.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a Conversations. in the context of Gossip/conversation, news and personal information.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To generate students interest in the lessons topic.

Get the students to discuss whether they gossip/or hear gossip or watch the news. "So guys, do you gossip about people or hear gossip in conversation or perhaps watch the news?".

Clarification/analysis of MFPA of TL (5-7 minutes) • To provide opportunity to practice MFPA of TL.

Show the students examples of TL highlighting the change in tense and word changes (verbs and pronouns). Show students example sentences to highlight form and situational context. Show students example sentences for drilling and repetition pronunciation practice. "So, we have two sentences and I want you to match them to the correct options". "Ok guys, look at this example sentence, if we change this to the past tense and reported speech, how does the sentence change? "So, here we have some new example sentences repeat after me please".

Gist practice activity (5-7 minutes) • To present and practice understanding of lessons TL and topic and speaking skills.

Get students to complete the five questions, present simple direct speech to past simple reported speech, individually and then as a group together". "Ok guys, i want you to individually read these five sentences and then change them into the past simple and reported speech.

Controlled practice activity (10-15 minutes) • To provide controlled practice of the language.

Send students a google doc form with a conversation task and get the students individually to read the completed conversation text. Then with a partner in breakout rooms get them to complete the second conversation's missing words. (direct speech in present simple to reported speech past simple). "So guys I have sent you a google docs form, once you receive it I want you to open it and then read the conversation between Nick and Janet individually. (Ok, guys, now I'm going to put you in pairs and in breakout rooms and I want you to complete the second conversations missing words). CCQ 1) "What language tense are we using?". CCQ 2) "What words from the first conversation are we changing?".

Free practice activity (3-6 minutes) • To develop students speaking skills relating to the TL.

Get students in pairs and get them to tell their partner something somebody told them at a special occasion and their partner has to guess what the special occasion was, get the students to swap roles. If I am running low on time I will adapt this activity and complete it as a group all together in the main room to save time. (give an example). "So guys, for our final activity, I'm going to put you in pairs and I want you to tell your partner something somebody said to you at a special occasion and I want your partner to try and guess what the special occasion was".

Conduct Feedback and DEC. (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback and DEC to students .

Before concluding the class, allow the students to ask questions and provide feedback and DEC where it is appropriate.
