Materials

Abc Navigate Coursebook

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of infinitive patterns and -ing by using nouns.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about the five types of boredom in the context of the usage grammar

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To start the lesson students will look up to 2 pictures (of a bored animal and a bored person) they will see 2 questions "Do animals get bored?" and "When/Where do you get bored?". Students will discuss with a partner in a breakout room for 2min, after it, they will share their experiences with the class, by creating an interaction between students and more student-centered, I will also share my ideas so students will feel more comfortable to share theirs. This lead-in is an introduction, for students to get familiar with the texts they will read along with the lesson.

Text work (gist + intensive task) (8-8 minutes) • The purpose is to ask students to identify the TL.

Going to the next slide, after the Lead-in, I will give instructions before they start reading, so I'm making sure they are reading with a purpose. Students will read "The Five Types of Boredom" and after reading, I will tell the students to answer on a sticky note on the Jamboard presentation "Which type of boredom do you experience?"I will also give feedback. In the intensive task the text they just read has missing words, so students will have to fill the gaps on a google form by choosing the correct answer. I will conduct feedback and we will check the answers together.

MFP (12-12 minutes) • The purpose is to clarify the TL.

In this section, students will first answer meaning on their own, by filling the gaps with the form into the meaning for example "We use _______________ to indicate what something can or will be used for. example: "The children need a GARDEN TO PLAY" and "We use ________________ to indicate an attribute by modifying the verb with -ing. example: ________________" creating a guided discovery; they will go into breakout rooms to discuss the answers and after it all together as a class. For Form and Pronunciation, students will tell me how the order goes by following the form (Noun + To + Infinitive and Noun + Preposition + Gerund) they will put the words in order, I will ask them to tell me where does the stress go and how to pronounce them, With this way, I organized the MFP I'm reducing TTT and I'm creating a guided discovery environment. I will also ask 2 CCQs "Has this already happened?" and "Does the word traveling refers to the past or to the present?" to see if they understood the timeline of the sentences.

Controlled Practice (8-8 minutes) • The purpose is accuracy

After being in contact with MFP, students will be able to practice what they learned, they will answer the task in pairs, they go to a google form, they will read a text and they will fill the gaps by choosing the words of the box and they will have to conjugate them. They will have 6 min to read and to fill the gaps, and then we will check the answers together.

Freer Practice (8-8 minutes) • The purpose is fluency.

In this final section, students will practice with fluency what they learned, by creating their sentences using the keywords for example (learn/to/like) or (of/learning/talent). Here they will demonstrate they learned the differences of when to use infinitive and when to use -ing. In the end, I will conduct feedback.
