Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about possible improvements for work environment

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a list of suggestions in the context of improving their work environment

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students are to be shown three pictures: a Google-like, unorthodox work environment; one in which a boss can be seen screaming at his employees; and finally a home office. Students are to mention their opinions on which has the worse/best work conditions of the three; if one of the pictures is left out, a students will be directly told to adress it. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1yGWuw3sOXdCoWlsxxUje8sobI5inG9C5q4OCN9uh4LA/edit?usp=sharing

Pre-Reading/Listening (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

So that students have no issues regarding properly visualizing some of the possible improvements listed in the text, a number of them will be shown next to their correspondend visual aids. Also, the language chunk 'so that' is going to be presented, as it might prove itself useful throughout the lesson.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students will be sent a Google Forms worksheet that includes both the text an a number of gist questions, to be said: one about what the text is about overall; one about how students feel regarding its last sentence; regarding which work environment improvements they deem to be actually useful. After finishing, the results shall be discussed either as a group or in pairs. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc_bcxjkgs08WAW960dCvsUE1nzxRk-P0Bw3usUgKHMOM1ZGg/viewform?usp=sf_link

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

After having been given some feedback as to how the previous task went, studets shall receive a second Google Forms worksheet, this time including questions that require more attention to detail. Results shall be discussed after they're done with the task. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfk-5pei5X7WVUacLeHo0JidBfzubrr28bfFSOUQozHl9-CbA/viewform?usp=sf_link

Post-Reading/Listening (12-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students shall be sent a link to a Padlet page, in which they'll be asked to list a number of possible improvements for their work environments. They can talk about the one from their work site, of course, but it's expected that at least one of them mentions improvements for their home office. Were a student not to have a work environment in mind, they can take it from a list right there on the Padlet page. After they're done listing around three improvements, we are to discuss which ones are the most essential ones as a group. Feedback shall be given afterwards. https://padlet.com/joaoantonio2/vznlivdhft839w0l
