Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Fixed and semi-fixed expressions with FIRST in the context of experiences

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of experiences

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask students to share with a partner when they first discovered they were good at something. Instructions 1 minute Discussion in BORs 3 minutes OCFB. asking 1-2 students to share 1-2 min.

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students will read a short text about how a couple first met. Students will have to talk whether or not they felt the same when the first met. - Quick instructions 1 minute - Individual reading for 2 minutes. - BOR pair discussion for 2-3 minutes

Highlighting (5-6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The students will read one more time and underline the fixed expressions with FIRST they can find. - Instructions 1 min - More detail reading and underlining 3 min - OCFB. Nominate 1-2 students to share their results

Clarification (12-13 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Students will be given an worksheet to discover MFP of the vocabulary at hand. work in pairs in BORs - Instructions 1-2 min - Worksheet completing time form MFP. 6-7 min - OCFB. Pronunciation drilling and confirmation of CCQs. 3-4

Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will work in pairs completing a task asking them to come up with their own sentences with their own sentences for the 6 fixed expressions - Quick instructions: 1-minutes - BOR pair activity: 5-minutes - OCBF. Nominate 2-3 students. 2 minutes

Free Practice (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will discuss how they met their (current or previous) partners trying to use at least some of the expressions - Instructions. 1 minute - Class discussion 4 minutes - DEC feedback 3 minutes
