Description

In this lesson, students will learn to use relative clauses of who, which, and that. They will be shown pictures and asked to complete a sentence and then tested to see how much they know about relative clauses. The teacher will go over MFPA with the whole class. Then they will work in groups to connect two sentences with the relative clauses. Lastly, there will be a freer practice so the students can make their own sentences using relative clauses

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of of relative clauses, who, which, and that.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Practice writing relative clauses on their own.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher will show the students two pictures with two sentences next to the pictures. The teacher will elicit the students to add the word they that is missing in the sentence.

Exposure (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

The students will be doing a google form picking which relative clause goes in the sentence. The teacher will demo the first question, eliciting the students to pick the correct relative clause. The students will have two minutes to fill out the form on their own. Next, they will work in breakout rooms with partners to go over their answers. Lastly, we will go over the answers with the whole class.

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The teacher will go over the MFPA with the whole class eliciting students to answer CCQ's for meaning. For pronunciation, the teacher will have students do a drilling exercise focusing on the intonation of the words. The teacher will elicit the students' opinions on appropriacy.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will be given two sentences and will be asked to make one sentence using relative clauses. The teacher will demo how to do the first two sentences, using who and which. Then the students will have to do the task on their own for 2 minutes. Then they will work with a partner and go over what they did. Lastly, we will have whole class feedback going over the sentences together.

Semi-Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

The students will be put in groups so that they can make their own sentences using relative clauses. The teacher will listen to the conversations in the breakout rooms and help if it is needed. Once they have finished they will go over what they have written with the whole class.

Free Practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The teacher will go over corrections of the sentences that were created and will ask if there are any questions before class is over.
