Main Aims

  • To provide specific information, deduction and inference listening practice using a text about happiness in the context of winning the lottery

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of unfamiliar words in the context of winning the lottery
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of money and happiness

Procedure

Warmer (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and activate the student's schemata while introducing the teacher.

-T asks Ss their names and a few things about themselves -T shows rules of the betting game on the screen. -T models a question and shows how the betting works -The class plays the betting game -T sums up the bets for everyone and asks how these T bucks make them feel. -You suddenly got some T bucks. How do you feel? -Are you happier than when you had nothing? -You had some the you lost, how did that make you feel?

Pre-Teaching Vocabulary (5-7 minutes) • To help students understand the text better

-T elicits words from the students with a situation/ context -T displays definition of the word -T drills pronunciation -T asks about stress

Pre-Listening Prediction (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and relate their experience from the betting game into a large context.

-T shows questions on the board and asks Ss to SS them -T puts SS in BORs to discuss their answers in pairs for 3 minutes -T gets feedback from Ss

While-Listening #1 T-F Task (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging task listening for specific information

-T shows Ss the questions and asks them to identify the points made on the recording -Ss listen to the recording, working individually. (2 minutes) -T displays the AK and asks for feedback

While-Listening #2 (10-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

-T will play the recording again, asking students to take notes if they'd like (the students may want to skip this stage if they remember) -T will play a new recording on a similar theme, again asking the students to listen carefully. -T will ask students to compare and contrast the two recordings, looking for similar points and finding different opinions. -T puts students in BORs to discuss and work in pairs for 5 minutes. -T asks Ss for feedback.

Post-Listening (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and apply this knowledge to their personal lives.

-T will ask students What would they do if they won the lottery? Would their happiness level change? Do they agree with the recordings? -T puts students in BORs to discuss. -T asks Ss for feedback. *This stage could be extended if there is leftover time.
