Description

In this lesson I will present and revise how comparatives and superlatives are formed. First I will go through grammar and students will do different excercises which are all related to the main topics. At the end of the lesson there will be more pair work and discussion. The lesson will be course book oriented.

Materials

Abc New Inside Out Intermediate Unit 4, pg. 33

Main Aims

  • In addition to this the students will understand the use of adverbs before adjectives to describe more precise comparison.
  • By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to compare things and they understand the meaning and the use of comparatives and superlatives.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of words related to the topic "sport".
  • Students will be able to describe Istanbul by using comparatives and superlatives.

Procedure

Warmer "Finland-Turkey comparison" (3-5 minutes) • This warmers' aim is to introduce the students to comparatives and superlatives

I will draw Finland and Turkey on the whiteboard and give few facts about Finland. Then together with the students' (but strongly led by me) we will make simple comparison between F and T.

Grammar about comparatives and superlatives (8-10 minutes) • To present and revise how comparatives and superlatives are formed

In pairs the students will do task 1 in which they will put adjectives into 4 different groups. We will go the task through together as a whole class and also read the written rules from below. I will make clear and short summary on the white borad (1 example per group). We will also go memorize the irregular ones (bad, good and far). I will have to make sure that everyone knows what the words "syllable" and "irregular" means.

Grammar about adverbs (clarification for task 2) (3-5 minutes) • To present the adverbs being used in a task 2

I will explain the adverbs mainly just by using visual aids. I will draw on the board and use pictures.

Using comparatives and superlatives in a sentence (3-5 minutes) • To reinforce the subject being taught

In pairs students will do the task 2. Before doing the task I will go through different types of sports in case there are few unclear ones (such as Dragon boat racing).

Who knows Istanbul best -activity (5-10 minutes) • To practice the students' ability to tell about the city that they live in

In groups of 3 students will answer to questions which I will give as a handout. They will decide the answers together and answer in full sentences in a group talk.

Group game "guess the adjective" (8-10 minutes) • To give the students a chance to practice their speaking in a game and also see if I've reached my main aim for the lesson

I will divide the group into two groups. I will show them two pictures simultanously and they will have to guess the adjective related to these pictures. In order to get points they need to be able to create correct forms of comparatives (1 point) and superlatives (2 points). This will balance the overall lesson since the they might be worn out from the previous grammar load.
