Speaking for Fluency

In this lesson, Ss will focus on listening for gist and detail utilizing activities with a main focus on speaking for fluency. The lead-in will begin with PW. Ss will share their thoughts about a picture of a father and baby. Listening for gist will be the aim when listening to the recording for exercise 1, which is to follow. PW will be utilized when discussing answers for this exercise. Exercise 2 will focus on listening for detail and FB will be gathered through w/c discussion. In order to prompt discussion concerning life events students will be giving a Speaking HO, in which PW will be utilized to discuss important life events. This HO will be the foundation for the activity to follow. The freer speaking activity will be, "The Road of My Life" exercise. In this task Ss will utilize some of the events from the previous activity in order to create a timeline of their life. This exercise is very personal and the students will utilize PW, in which they will choose their partner. Following this exercise will be w/c FB about what was learnt about each other. If time allows, error correction will take place on the w/b with Ss correcting errors from sentences overheard during the last activity.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of Life Journey

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about Life Events in the context of Family


Lead-in/ Pre-Listening (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage Ss

-Father/Baby Picture HO I will model the picture of father/baby and distribute the father/baby picture HO. I will ask the questions in exercise 1 and take general FB

Listening for Gist (10-12 minutes) • Ss will further develop their gist listening skills

-CD Ex 1.56 -Listening HO p68 Ss will listen to the CD and receive HO Listening. PW will be utilized to check answers. FB will be taken from WC.

Listening for detail (10-12 minutes) • To provide Ss with a more challenging specific information listening task.

-CD Ex 1.56 -Listening HO p68 Ss will discuss questions in exercise 2 utilizing PW. Ss will listen to the CD for the second time to check their answers using PW. W/C FB will be used.

Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To provide Ss with a foundation for Freer Speaking

-Speaking HO P69 Ss will be introduced to specific life events in order to kick-start the thought process for their own life events activity. Ss will use PW for this activity. W/C FB will be initiated.

Preparation and Freer Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To provide Ss with an opportunity to expand on what they've learned

-The Road of My Life HO Ss will be given the HO and asked to use PW to create and discuss the timeline of their own life. I will walk the room to aid and listen for errors, which will be discussed after the activity if time permits. WC FB to follow.
