Description

In this lesson, students will have developed speaking fluency, with the aim of incorporating the functional fixed phrases "Why don't you..." for making suggestions, and "That's a good idea, but.." for polite refusal, or "That's a great idea!" for acceptance of suggestions. In the lesson, we will cover MFPA of the TL, in the context of discussions about preparing for a speech or other communicative task for school or work.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To give Ss the opportunity to practice speaking fluency in the context of making, accepting, or politely refusing suggestions for preparation for an important meeting or presentation.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice reading for gist in the context of a dialogue in which one classmate gives another suggestions to prepare for a class presentation.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show Lead-in photo Ask students to look at the picture and think about the following questions: "What is happening here? What happened the day before?" T conducts OCFB

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

--Presentation of context-- Show text Ask students to read the text: "While reading, try to identify the characters. Who is giving a recital, and who is giving suggestions?" 2 minutes for reading Highlight "Why don't you?" CCQ: "Is this a suggestion or giving an imperative?" Answer: "A suggestion" Highlight "That's a good idea, but" CCQ "Does she accept, or decline" Answer: decline Highlight "That's a great idea!" CCQ "Does she accept?" Answer: yes --GD for Meaning-- Send the gist quiz to Ss I: "Please check the chatbox and open the form" ICQ "Do you have the form?" I: "Answer the form". 1 minute Ss answer the quiz Demo submit and view score I: "Click on submit and then view score" Check answers and conducts OCFB

Useful Language (5-6 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Set task: Role play: Last slide Show students role cards Explain the order of activity, 1-2 then swap; 3-4 then swap Demo with a volunteer Send Ss to BORs When Ss have finished (at 6 minutes), regroup partners in new BORs Regroup again after another 6 minutes Monitor BORs for use of phrases and general fluency Annotate correct and incorrect use of language for review in DEC

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Conduct OCFB Project annotated language (correct and incorrect) from productive task to Ss Ask students to pick the correct sentence from the examples Ask students' participation (suggestions) to improve language
