Autograph Hunters, Time Adverbials Lesson

Description

In this lesson, the students will focus on "time adverbials" and they will have a chance to practice them. Firstly, the teacher will provide a brief overview on the meanings of different time adverbials with a matching activity. Then the sts will check the position of these target time adverbials on the reading text that they study previously. This is followed by a sentence completion activity. If it is needed, the teacher focus on the pronunciation of some of time adverbials and drill them. Finally, the sts will have a chance to practice the target time adverbials with a competition on obtaining a famous person's autograph.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of autograph hunters.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students.

I will start with the question "Would you go to an event just to get the autograph of a star you liked? And why?" I will write the question on the board, collect answers and let them tell their ideas.

Test #1 (5-7 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language "time adverbials".

The students will have three definitions about how these time adverbials are used. On separate pieces of paper they will have time adverbials. They will work as groups of three and try to match these definitions with the time adverbials. First, they will study with the group members then they will check their answers with the answer key on the board by OHP.

Teach (8-10 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage and focus on the position of time adverbials in a sentence.

After the sts are provided a review on the descriptions of time adverbials, they will study on the position of them in a sentence. I will write a sentence on the board and emphasize the different positions with letters. The sentence is; "I said no ." A B C To elicit the information from the students, they are asked to check the time adverbials in the reading text with their partners next to them. The time adverbials are highlighted in the reading text. After they study on the position of these time adverbials, they checked them with the teacher.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language "time adverbials" again and compare with the first test.

The students work on the exercise individually. They will choose the correct time adverbial to complete the text. After they finish working, they check their answers with the person next to them. Then I will give feedback as WC. During this activity the sts will also have a chance to pronounce the target time adverbials. If it is needed, I will do error correction and focus on their pronunciations and word stress. I will model and the sts drill some of them both individually and chorally. Problematic words may be; eventually /ɪˈvɛntʃuəli/ subsequently /ˈsʌbsɪkwəntli/ afterwards /ˈɑːftəwədz/ initially /ɪˈnɪʃ(ə)li /

Free practice (10-13 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language "time adverbials" in the context of autograph hunters.

The final activity is a competition. First the sts will choose a famous person. They will imagine that they have four weeks to obtain this person's autograph.They will work with their partners and brainstorm as many ideas as possible. Finally, they will report their ideas to the class using the time adverbials. They will vote for the best plan.
