Description

In this lesson we will clarify get collocations through the context of meeting an old friend at a wedding. Students will read a conversation text to get the context of the target language and complete a gist task. The main bulk of the lesson will be on the meaning, form, and pronunciation of 4 get collocations. They will also do a controlled practice task and free practice task.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will greet Ss screenshare share Google Slide with question: "When was the last get-together (gathering) that you went to? " to introduce topic to Ss and model how to answer. Ss will answer the discussion question in breakout rooms (2min) T will elicit response from 1-2 Ss (2min)

Text Work (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T will introduce the prediction gist task by introducing the topic. T will share Google Jamboard and tell students about the wedding and share, "I haven't seen my friends in a long time. What do you think we will talk about at the wedding?" Ss will post on Jamboard their predictions. (2 min) T will screenshare Text with Ss and Ss will read for 2 mins Ss will discuss in groups which of their predictions were right. (2 min) T will elicit answer from 1-2 students on what they thought would be discussed in the conversation and what the conversation was actually about. (2 min)

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language ("get" collocations)

T will screenshare Google Slide with Guided Discovery Task and highlight the 4 sentences with target language. Ss will work on 1st slide (matching meaning and definition) in groups for 2 minutes. T will conduct OCFB to go over meaning by eliciting answers from students and using CCQ to ensure that students have understood. (2 mins) Ss will then work in groups on 2nd slide with questions about form. (2 mins) T will conduct OCFB to go over answer and focus on some points of form for understanding. (2 mins) T will then share Google Slide with pronunciation activity and check that students can play the audio. T will demonstrate how to answer. Ss will work in the same groups to answer questions about linking. T will conduct OCFB and drill pronunciation for a 1-2 of the phrases. (2 mins)

Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T will screenshare Google form with Controlled Practice Task of short answer questions. T will complete one of the questions as an example for students. Ss will complete individually for 2-3 minutes. Ss will compare answers in breakout rooms. T will conduct OCFB (2 min)

Free Practice (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice through discussion of the target language

T will screenshare Google Slide with free practice questions. T will demonstrate how to answer using examples. (1-2 min) T will share link in the zoom chat so Ss can read the questions during breakout groups. Ss will answer in breakout rooms (3 minutes) T will elicit answers from Ss (3 mins)

Delayed Error Correction (2-3 minutes) • to give language feedback for any mistakes noticed during the class time

T will use a blank Google Slide or Zoom Board to review any language errors heard during OCFB or breakout rooms and correct with Ss by typing out in real time
