Description

In this lesson students will use pre-created and improvised conversations to introduce and practice phrasal verbs

Abc Phrasal Verbs Questionnaire

Main Aims

  • To introduce provide practice of phrasal verbs in the context of simple questions

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of phrasal verbs

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will ask students questions related to two of the phrasal verbs. Have students separate into groups in break out rooms to answer questions and get a feel for the phrasal verbs.

Exposure (Gist Task) (2-3 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Teacher provides a conversation for the students using target language (phrasal verbs), and allows the students to work through the conversation individually on Google forms.

Peer Feedback (2-3 minutes) • To allow students to share feedback with peers

Students check their answers briefly with their peers using Zoom's chat box feature

Open Class Feedback (Gist Task) (2-3 minutes) • To allow teacher to check understanding & students to share feedback on task

Teacher goes over the answers with the students, eliciting answers and correcting as needed.

Clarification (3-4 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Teacher provides a short task for matching meaning to phrasal verbs for students to complete in groups in break out rooms.

Open Class Feedback (MFP) (2-3 minutes) • To allow teacher to check understanding & students to share feedback on task

Teacher goes over the answers for the meaning task with the students, eliciting answers and correcting as needed before clarifying form and pronunciation using CCQs.

Controlled Practice (4-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students practice phrasal verbs by completing a multiple choice fill-in the-blanks task on Google Forms.

Peer Feedback (2-3 minutes) • To allow students to share feedback with peers

Students check their answers briefly with their peers in break out rooms

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Using exercise b, students will interview each other in groups using breakout rooms to practice phrasal verbs. Teacher will monitor for errors.

Open Class Feedback (3-4 minutes) • To allow teacher to check understanding & students to share feedback on task

Teacher will close break out rooms and ask students to report on what they learned about their peers, using the phrasal verbs for the lesson.
