Description

In this lesson, students will exercise listening skills through an audio recording about teenage carers. Students will learn some new vocabulary words from the audio. The main bulk of the lesson is focused on gist listening and detailed listening through appropriate tasks. They will also discuss with each other about the topic of teenagers.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about teenage carers

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of teenage carers
  • To provide clarification and practice of look after, massage, and housework in the context of teenage carers

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will greet Ss screenshare share Google Jamboard with question: "What reputation do teenagers have?" to introduce topic to Ss and model how to answer. T will share link to Jamboard in Zoom chat. Ss will work on the jamboard individually (1 min) T will elicit response from 1-2 Ss (2min)

Vocabulary (4-6 minutes) • To go over meaning, form, and pronunciation of 3 vocabulary words and prepare students to listen to the text.

T will share screen to show Ss how to complete task and send link in Zoom chat. Ss will work in pairs on the vocabulary slide. (2min) T will elicit feedback from Ss for answers and CCQ to check understanding of meaning and form (3 min) T will go over pronunciation of the word "massage" to help students understand this word in the text. T will ask student how to pronounce “massage” (with schwa (American) or /ae/(British)) and then demonstrate the differences using Google link on pronunciation to allow Ss to hear the differences between the American and British pronunciations (1min)

Gist Listening (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening tasks

T will screenshare Google Form Task 3 and go over short questions with students. T will instruct students to listen for the overall idea of the recording and work on the Form while they listen. (1 min) T play audio for "Teenage Carers" 2_23 for class one time (2.5 mins) and then break Ss into groups. Ss will discuss their answers. (2 min) T will elicit feedback from 1-2 students in OCFB (2min)

Detailed Listening (10-13 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

T will share screen for Google Form Detailed Listening Task and demonstrate how to answer by checking Alice and/or Daniel(1 min). T will share link to Google Form Detailed Listening Task on Zoom chat. Ss will listen to the audio while answering the questions on the form. T will check in and see if there needs to be a 2nd listen and play again as needed (2.5-5min) Ss will go into breakout rooms for review (3 min). T will conduct OCFB (3min)

Post Task (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and exercise speaking skills

T will share Google Slide with the response question "What kind of teenager were you? Were you similar to Alice and Daniel?" so Ss can hear and read the question. Ss will discuss in groups in breakout rooms (3 mins) T will elicit answer from 1 S (or 2 Ss if time permits) (2min)

Delayed Error Correction (2-3 minutes) • to give language feedback for any mistakes noticed during the class time

T will use a blank Google Slide or Zoom Board to review any language errors heard during OCFB or breakout rooms and correct with Ss by typing out in real time.
