In this lesson students will be learning about fixed expressions using the topic offers and requests.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show the students a google slide, it will have pictures of different Mexican restaurants. I will ask the students to speak in pairs about where they like to eat. I will place the students in breakout rooms to discuss the topic.

Exposure (2-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will show the students a slide, it will instruct them to listen to an audio and answer the questions on the slide. I will put them into breakout rooms to discuss their answers. I will then bring the students back for OCFB. I will ask the students for their answers showing them slides of the correct answers with the target language highlighted in bold.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will then show the students a new slide, this time the students will need to listen to the audio and put the relevant events in the correct order. The events will be based upon the target language. I will then show the students the correct answers.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will show the students a slide with tasks that will allow the students to discover the language for the themselves. I will then give the students the correct answers. I will explain the meaning of the fixed expressions. I will then show the students a slide with a box of fixed expressions and a box of variables. I'll the students to match the words, fixed expressions and variables, to the correct boxes. I'll then show the students the correct answers and explain the form. Followed by a CCQ: Will the fixed expression ever change? yes/no. I will the show the students a slide and ask them where the stress is in the sentence. After their feedback I will show them the correct answers, followed by a drill exercise. I will then show the students a list of polite and impolite expressions and ask them which groups of words and polite and impolite. I'll then show them the correct answers.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will show the students a google slide with a fill the missing gap task. I will give the students and allocated time to finish the work. I will then put the students into breakout rooms to discuss their answers. I will then bring the students back for OCFB where I will ask the students to present their answers whilst showing them slides of the correct answers.

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will demonstrate a role play scenario with the students using a google slide. I will then send the students into breakout rooms to practice using the target language with one another using role play. One student will be the waiter and the others are customers.
