Description

In this lesson, students will practice using functions that expressing accepting, rejecting and coming up with solutions to problems.

Main Aims

  • To practice and revise functional language to accept, reject, and come up with solutions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about problem solving in the context of work-related problems.
  • To provide clarification of language used for accepting, rejecting, and coming up with new ideas in the context of problem solving.
  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of problem solving.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss mark on Google From which problem that would solve best.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ss listen to Audio 5.5. After listening, they answer the Google Form and choose the summary that best summarizes the information from the audio clip. In the chat, Ss share with a partner which answer they chose and why. Come back together as a group and discuss their answers. Conduct OCFB.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ss work through Google Slide in pairs to match the TL with the category accept, reject, or coming up with new ideas. Discuss answers together as a class, ask meaning CCQ's, refer back to context, conduct OCFB. Through GD, Ss identify the form of each exponent. Ss identify the fixed part of the sentence and how to construct the rest of the sentence. Go over pronunciation, linking, and intonation with class. Conduct OCFB.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

If time allows, have Ss work through the Google Form where they have to pick the best option to complete or correct the sentence. Ss check their work with a partner in Breakout Rooms. Come together as a class and conduct OCFB.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In groups, Ss choose Scenario A or B. Together they come up with possible solutions, they pros and cons of each solution, and determine which idea is the best using the TL. Each group share their idea with the class. Conduct OCFB and DEC.
