Description

In this lesson, students will review the rules for plural nouns and indefinite articles, followed by some controlled practice of the use of articles, and a final spoken game to help them consolidate the use of articles and plurals.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-8 minutes) • To relate the lesson to the previous context and engage students

Set up WB: Team 1 | Team 2 | Team 3 1. 2. etc. 10. Put students into 3 teams, and line them up so that one student from each team is at the board, and they line up to the back of the room. Instructions: I will show the last person a word on a piece of paper [gesture to indicate] You will *whisper* the word to the next person. [show next person] And you will *whisper* the word to the next person. [etc.] [To front person of group] You will write the word on the whiteboard. The first team to write the word correctly will get one point. ICQs: Will you shout or whisper? How can you get a point? Play the game

Test #1 (5-7 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

[Erase the words from Team 1 and Team 3 column, but leave up Team 2 column] Elicit -- are these adjectives? verbs? nouns? -- are they singular or plural? [On WB -- a/an plural] With your partner, can you decide if these words take a or an? And what's the plural form? [If necessary, demo on the board with bus / email / family] Feedback: Ask early finishers to put their answers on the board, check with whole class

Teach (10-15 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

So, what's the rule? Chest HO1 "Look at the examples on the board, and match the rules" Feedback: - Check in pairs - Answer key - T clarification, as necessary

Test #2 (7-9 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Chest HO2 Ss will complete the blanks with a/an/- Feedback: - Check in pairs - WCFB -- elicit answers / clarify as necessary

Semi-controlled spoken practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with semi-controlled spoken practice of the target language

[On WB: He/She's going to a party, and he/she's bringing... I'm going to a party, and I'm bringing... ] [NOTE: Add alphabet at the top, if it hasn't remained there from the last lesson] Put Ss in two groups (WC, if less than 10 ppl) - Ss will say the phrase on the board and add what they are bringing (starting with A). The next S will say what the first S is bringing and add his/her own (starting with B), etc. ICQs: - Will you say only what you're bringing? (no, everyone before) - And you'll bring something that begins with.... ? (the next letter of the alphabet) - And you stop when... ? (the alphabet is finished) T monitors and collects errors for feedback.

Feedback and error correction • To provide feedback and error correction on the speaking activity

T will provide delayed feedback on errors collected from the speaking activity [This may involve further clarification of the TL, as well as some introduction of countable/uncountable nouns, if applicable]
