Description

This lesson is about functional language in relation to giving opinions. Students will be introduced to formal and informal ways to give opinions through listening task, explanation, and practice. There will be a fill in the blank practice and a Speaking task.

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of functional language for giving opinions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about giving opinions in the context of what makes a good teacher.
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a formal and informal usage of giving opinions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher is going to introduce a question on google jamboard to get students thinking and talking about giving an opinion. The question is "What makes a good teacher?" Ss will be asked to work in pairs to discuss the question and come up with at least five opinions on what makes a good teacher.

Highlighting (11-14 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

There will be a listening task of a discussion between two men on what they think is important to be a good teacher. Before they listen to audio, a google form with two questions will be introduced. The students will have the opportunity to read the questions before they listen. The Ss will be instructed to answer the questions as they listen, and then work in pairs for a minute to discuss their answers. Then they will share the answers with the whole class. Ss will then be introduced to another google form with seven questions. Questions 1-4 will be fill in the blank. Questions 5-7 will have a phrase and the students have to answer it the speakers in audio are giving an opinion or trying to change an opinion. Once the Teacher has explained the task, the students will listen to the same audio. Once finished they will work in pairs to review answers and then share with the whole class.

Clarification (7-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The teacher will introduce the meaning of functional language on google jam board. Next, the teacher will introduce appropriacy on a google form with six phrases. The students will have to choose if the phrase is informal or formal. The teacher will do the first one with the whole class. Then the students will have to fill out the form on their own. Once finished, the whole class will go over the answers together with teacher. For pronunciation, the teacher will introduce it on google jam board. First the teacher will go over the stong way of giving an opinion and the weak way of giving an opinion. Next, the teacher will go over the proper way to say a phrase so it does not sound awkward. For Form, the teacher will introduce the use of adverbs to make the meaning stronger.

Language Practice (7-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The teacher will introduce a google form for language practice where the students will have to do five fill in the blank by choosing the correct phrase for a sentence. The phrases used are informal and formal ways of giving opinions. The teacher will do the first question with the whole class. Students will then fill out the google form on their own, then work in pairs to check their answers and then do whole class feedback.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The teacher will ask students to work in pairs and talk about five qualities of a good friend in their opinion. The teacher will have them open the google form with phrases they went over in pronunciation so that they can use them if they like. They will be put in groups and have 3mins to discuss what they think. Lastly, their will be whole class feedback.
