Selfies
2nde level

Description

Students will be exposed to new vocabulary in the context of social media and selfies. The lesson will start by encouraging them to describe the first picture of Unit 1. Then, we will move to discuss a bench of other pictures and paragraphs (p14-15). The students will then have to do a brainstorming preparing them for reading the text (p16) and answer some comprehension questions. They will, subsequently, have a listening task and answer some related comprehension questions.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about the selfie phenomenon
  • To provide gist listening practice in a real life context about selfies

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a class debate

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

*Ask ss to have a look at the picture on page 12-13 and comment about it. "Do you often take pictures of yourself, with your friends or family?" "When?" "Where?" "On what occasions?" *Ask ss to scan the pictures and paragraphs on page 14-15. *Ask ss to pick the document that illustrates the saying "A picture is worth a thousand word" explaining why. *Debate with ss: "What do we take selfies for?"

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

*In pairs, ask ss to brainstorm in order to find common points between "selfie" and "autobiography"

While-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with gist reading tasks

*Ask ss to read the text and answer question n°2 page 4 (workbook)

Pre-Listening (1-2 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening task and make it accessible

*Ask ss to look at the selfie page 17 and describe the context they think the photo was taken in.

While-Listening (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with gist listening tasks

*Play the audio *Ask ss to answer the quizz *Ask ss to cross check together *Open class feedback

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with an opportunity to expand on what they've learned

*In small groups, ask ss to find two arguments on "Why can we say that selfie is "the new autobiogaphy"?" *Open class debate

Homework • To provide students with an opportunity to expand on what they've learned

*Ask ss to do the Training Task on page 17 and send their pictures by email. They will have to take a "shelfie" (a photo of their bookshelf or their desk) and describe the objects in the photo.
