Description

In this lesson, students will practice their reading skills on a magazine article about fashion.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about people's clothes and shopping habits in the context of fashion

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of people's clothes and shopping habits.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows students the following questions: "What do you normally wear? Where do you buy your clothes? Is Fashion important for you? Why?" and then shows them his model answers, then, students ask the question to their partners and share their ideas. T will monitor interactions and collect information for Content Feedback or Delayed Error Correction.

Pre-Reading/Listening (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Students will carry out a matching activity (lexis and pictures), checking first with their partners to build confidence and the as a whole class. Then, T will ask some of the following questions to check meaning: Designer Clothes: Are they usually expensive? Yes Are they from a famous designer like Oscar de la Renta or Coco Channel? Fashion Magazine: Is it a book? No Can you check new styles on them? What are some examples? Is Vogue an example? Try on: Do you have to pay? No Do you have to buy? No Send Back: Do you keep the clothes/article? No Do you return them to the store? Yes. After that, S will practice pronunciation of the vocabulary.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T will give instructions regarding the reading for gist activity. S will be given 3 minutes do match the pictures of people to the paragraphs and check with their partners through private messages. Then, T will check with the whole class.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T will proceed with the detailed reading activity. T will show students slide 4 on Jamboard and tell them they have to to complete a Google Form asking them to match some habits to some of the characters in the text. Ss will be given 6 minutes (extendable to 8 minutes). Ss will check with their classmates before checking as a whole class.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T will show Ss slide 7 on Jamboard and ask them to discuss the questions there with their partners in Breakout Rooms. Ss will have 5 minutes to do so, while T monitors their production. Once Ss go back to the main meeting, T will proceed with Content Feedback (if suitable) and Delayed Error Correction using some of the phrases produced by the Ss.
