TP8 - Functional Skills
Upper-Intermediate level

Materials

No materials added to this plan yet.

Main Aims

  • To practice and revise functional language to talk about making decisions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice using the correct functions when having discussions and debates.
  • To be able to form sentences correctly when using the target language.

Procedure

Warmer/Gist Task (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students and practice listening for gist.

I will play a recording for students to listen to and I will ask them what they think the two people in the audio are talking about. This will be a short class discussion.

MAFP- Meaning, Appropriacy, For and Pronunciation (12-15 minutes) • To clarify meaning, appropriacy, form and pronunciation of 5 sentences.

Meaning - I will share my screen to students showing them 5 sentences. Students will also be given three possible functions to choose from. Students must match the correct sentence to the correct function. We will complete this together as a class. Appropriacy - I will share my screen with students showing them the same five sentences, students must decide whether they think the sentence is: formal, neutral or informal. We will complete this together as a class. Form - I will share my screen with students showing them the five sentences which we previously covered, students must then for each sentence decide which part of the sentence is fixed and which part of the sentence is not. We will complete this together as a class. Pronunciation - I will ask students to repeat the five sentences that we have previously been covering in order to check students pronunciation. I will then read the sentences out to students clearly and slowly and ask them where they think the word stress is. We will then briefly cover intonation to get students to understand the correct emotions we use when saying these kind of sentences. We will complete this together as a class.

Controlled Practice (9-11 minutes) • To practice using the target language correctly in a controlled manner.

I will provide students with a google forms link, There will be a number of questions, for each question students must select the correct function. Students will complete this by themselves then briefly discuss their answers with their peers in private chat. I will then conduct class feedback.

Freer Practice (8-10 minutes) • To practice using the target language correctly in a freer practice manner.

I will send students into breakout rooms, I will ask them to discuss whether they think that students should be allowed to go back to school for the new semester (baring in mind what has been going on with COVID19). I will give them my opinion using each one of the three functions that we covered. For example: What if we send them back to school and they catch the virus? - Reasons for/against I think they should stay at home until everything calms down. - Opinion I see what you mean, but I still think they should stay home as their safety is really important. - Agree/disagree. I will ask students to discuss this, baring in mind the functions which we covered.

Feedback - DEC (5-7 minutes) • To provide correction of any common mistakes made by students throughout the lesson

I will place five sentences which were made by students throughout the lesson on the board, some of which are correct, some of which are incorrect. Students need to look at these sentences and decide if they are correct or incorrect. If the sentence is incorrect, they need to provide the correct way of forming the sentence. We will complete this together as a class.
