Description

In this lesson, students will learn and practice functional language of phrases for speaking through the situation (inviting and making arrangements- checking if someone is free) using Navigate B1 Pre-intermediate pg. 42.

Materials

Main Aims

  • Students will learn and practise functional language of phrases for speaking through the situation (inviting and making arrangements- checking if someone is free) using Navigate B1 Pre-intermediate pg. 42.
  • To provide clarification and practice of language used for inviting and making arrangements- checking if someone is free.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide listening practice for language for speaking in real life situations.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher will set a warm and welcoming tone and welcome students to the lesson. The teacher will use (TP 4 Google Jamboard https://jamboard.google.com/d/1eqowfOcrdsauVEBxei--kO3WXBE2J4rRuvAfk0iijDk/edit?usp=sharing) to present an image of two people in conversation with one another. The teacher will ask students to consider what kind of friend are they. The teacher will provide students with a link to (TP 4 Google Form1 https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf_IlvXbgKTHQy19dyHzvgs2gh-PneOwgJAvDJVX3yjwwdnqg/viewform?usp=sf_link) to assess themselves. The teacher will conduct OCFB and encourage students to share how they feel about their scores and listen in to their responses. Students responses should be unstructured and free to encourage conversation.

Gist Task (10-10 minutes) • To provide opportunity for student discovery and tap on prior knowledge

Teacher will use (TP 4 Google Jamboard https://jamboard.google.com/d/1eqowfOcrdsauVEBxei--kO3WXBE2J4rRuvAfk0iijDk/edit?usp=sharing) to present Gist task instructions. Teacher will instruct students to imagine if they ran into a friend whom they have not seen for some time. Student will need to construct a dialogue based on inviting their friend / arranging to meet again. (Teacher intentionally allows students to construct their own authentic dialogue with some/ little guidance from teacher) Instructions: Imagine if you ran into a friend whom you have not seen for some time. Construct a dialogue (conversation) where you 1) suddenly meet your friend, 2) invite your friend for an occasion, 3) arrange to meet them. 1) Person A: 1) suddenly meet your friend, 2) invite your friend for an occasion, 3) arrange to meet them. 2) Person B / C: 1) suddenly meet your friend, 2) accept/ decline your friend's invitation, 3) arrange to meet them. Rules: Everyone is a CONTRIBUTOR and must be part of the dialogue. 1 scribe is needed. *Third person is the MOTIVATOR. Everyone to present dialogue at the end of the breakout session. *Dialogue is designed for a A-B conversation. But depending the number of students in the class, teacher can make allowance for a third person A-B-C into the dialogue. Teacher will use Zoom Breakout Rooms to facilitate discussions. Students will present their dialogue to the class and teacher will conduct OCFB.

Useful Language (10-12 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

The teacher will use ( TP 4 Google Slides https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hhh4j5HYakOsgf4Qtk3cKRxS8eZXZ-nc/view?usp=sharing) to present Useful Language. Teacher will highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks The teacher will go through MFPA slides on language for speaking phrases asking CCQs to students. The teacher will go through: 1) Are you free ... ? 2) Are you doing anything ... ? 3) Is ... any good for you? 4) Do you fancy+ verb + -ing? 5) Yeah, I'd like/love to ... 6) That'd be ... ! 7) I'm afraid I can't make (it) ... because .. . 8) We could try ... 9) How about + verb + -ing ... instead? Students need to learn through discovery. The teacher will practice choral language for speaking phrases focusing on intonation and appropriacy of when to use the phrases. The teacher will get students to practice various phrases.

Exposure (2-2 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Teacher will use ( TP 4 Google Slides https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hhh4j5HYakOsgf4Qtk3cKRxS8eZXZ-nc/view?usp=sharing) to conduct Exposure. Teacher will provide a model of production through listening/ video. Teacher will highlight to students that they will listen to real life situations where these phrases are used. Please listen for each of the phrases: 1) Are you free ... ? 2) Do you fancy+ verb + -ing? 3) That'd be ... ! 4) I'm afraid I can't make (it) ... because .. .

Productive Task(s) (15-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

The teacher will instruct students to relook their initial dialogue again and improve on their authentic conversation using their learning to improve and extend their dialogue. Teacher will provide (TP 4 Google Form2 https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeyiQeWKPUH_uP372buILHXfrcMEgjPal8T9oHI4l_6hwuVZA/viewform?usp=sf_link) Instructions: Imagine if you ran into a friend whom you have not seen for some time. Construct a dialogue (conversation) where you 1) suddenly meet your friend, 2) invite your friend for an occasion, 3) arrange to meet them. 1) Person A: 1) suddenly meet your friend, 2) invite your friend for an occasion, 3) arrange to meet them. 2) Person B / C: 1) suddenly meet your friend, 2) accept/ decline your friend's invitation, 3) arrange to meet them. Students will present their dialogue to the class and the teacher will conduct OCFB.

Feedback and Error Correction (5-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

The teacher will use (TP 4 Google Jamboard https://jamboard.google.com/d/1eqowfOcrdsauVEBxei--kO3WXBE2J4rRuvAfk0iijDk/edit?usp=sharing) to conduct FEC instructions. The teacher will highlight language for speaking that was used well by students. The teacher will have students provide correction on target language and asking what needs to be corrected.
