Description

In this lesson, Ss practice the productive skill of speaking, in the context of travel and accommodation. Ss will practice using superlatives while speaking, which they learned in the previous lesson, and describe their past travel experiences, make future travel plans, and discuss hotel accommodations. Ss will also practice writing within parts of the speaking activities. In this lesson Ss will also be introduced to new vocabulary that they need to discuss hotel accommodations.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide speaking practice in the context of travel and accommodation using superlatives.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide writing practice in preparation for speaking activities.
  • To provide clarification of key vocabulary about hotels and accommodation needed for speaking practice.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Show Ss photos of some popular travel destination in Turkey. - Taksim, Bodrum, Antalya, Bozcada Iskile, Izmir, Marmaris... etc. (maybe include a photo of me in Bozcada or Bodrum for further engagement) - Ask a few Ss which place they prefer and why? - Tell your group members which places you have went or would like to go and why. - Hopefully eliciting some superlatives to be used in speaking about their favorite places, "the cheapest, most beautiful, most fun, etc.)

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

- Tell Ss they will read a text about someone's journey to Istanbul (my own). - Tell Ss to underline the superlatives they find in the text. - Give Ss a short amount of time to read the text. - Provide FB on the WB with Google Slides showing the different superlatives used in the text. - Ask Ss to discuss the story in PW and talk about why I liked visiting Istanbul the most.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

- Give Ss a quick matching exercise using photos, with the definition underneath them to clarify/ explain the words that will be needed in one of the upcoming tasks: - Breakfast, dinner, hotel, lunch, meals, single-room, double room, charge.

Productive Task(s) (25-30 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

- Tell Ss they will work in groups to plan a long journey, either in Turkey or to another country. - Tell Ss to make a list of 5 places to visit.. The most beautiful, the cheapest, the most famous, the most fun, the most relaxing, etc. (give them more options) - Prepare to tell the class about your journey as a group... "first we go.. then we visit the oldest/ most famous... in... At night we go to the cheapest/ most expensive hotel, and stay in a double room, have dinner in the most beautiful restaurant... etc". - Bring people from different groups to to other groups, and have them tell eachother about their journey and ask questions like: - "Where do you sleep at night? Where do you go during the day? What do you drink and/or eat?" - Ask Ss which journey is the most interesting and if they want to go on the journey with their classmates. - Tell Ss now they are on their journey and must find a place to stay, so they should call a hotel and ask about the details of the hotel or camping place. - Give everyone a letter of the alphabet, and ask them to remember their letter. -Give Ss cards to show what things they want the hotel to have, or what things the hotel has - Sit Ss back to back, and have them act out a phone call using the details on their card to help them. - Ask Ss to volunteer to act out their roles in front of the class.

Feedback and Error Correction (4-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

(If time permits) - Talk about Ss journeys and hotel exchanges as a WC, or ask students to volunteer to show their dialogue about a hotel.
