TP7 - Grammar - Present Perfect Continuous
Pre-Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson Ss learn about when and how the Present Perfect Continuous is used and how it is formed. The lesson ends with Controlled ans Freer Practice tasks.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of the present perfect continuous in the context of job searching.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a short discussion using the present perfect continuous in the context of job searching.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T greets Ss and the lesson starts. T shows Ss the jamboard and reads out the questions. T makes sure that Ss understand all the vocabulary. T says that Ss will go to Break Out Rooms and ask each other these questions for 3'-4'. T sends Ss to Break Out Rooms and monitors.

Exposure (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T says that Ss will now skim some short texts about some people and decide what job would be suitable for them. T shows the jamboard and gives Ss 1' to skim the texts. Ss share their opinions for 1' with the class. T then tells Ss that they will now answer some questions for each text. T shows the Google form and says that Ss have 5' for this task. When the time is up T shows the correct answers.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T proceeds to clarify the TL. T shows the presentation and the three extracts from the texts. T guides Ss to look at the underlined verbs and asks the CCQs form the presentation. T then shows Ss the timeline and explains it step by step (slide n.1). T then goes on to slide n.2 and elicits the form of the present perfect continuous and the difference between for and since. T shows slide n.3 where Ss are reminded the three forms of this tense and the expression 'how long' with which we ask questions in the present perfect continuous. T shows the two possible answers (for and since) and then shows Ss one extract form the texts. T asks Ss to transform this sentence using the present perfect continuous. T then goes to slide n.4 where Ss practise saying these sentences.

Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T tells Ss that they will have to fill in some gaps with personal information (no need to write down only the truth). T shows Ss the slides and sends the link for the presentation. Each Ss works on a different slide for 6'. Ss go to Break Out Rooms and T monitors and helps Ss when necessary.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T shows Ss the last slide in the presentation. Ss go to Break Out Rooms with their pair, look at their pair's slide from the CP and ask questions using the present perfect continuous for 5'. T monitors and notes down anything for DEC. When the time is up, T gives some content feedback and provides Ss with DEC. End of the lesson.
