Main Aims

  • To review and practice To Have and to Get Things Done

Subsidiary Aims

  • To introduce new language and review passive and active voice.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Introduce the slide deck with the photo of Cristiano Ronaldo and engage the students in the context of the lesson "Why does Cristiano look tired and upset?" I will give the students an opportunity to make a guess about the image, then reveal the opposite image of a happy and tranquil Cristiano and ask them what it means to them. The contrast between the two images should give the students the information they need to guess the topic which is "Exercise Your Brain." 5 - 6 minutes.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Advance the slide and introduce the lesson aim: To have and get things done. Then introduce the "five ways to keep your brain healthy" text and elicit target language from the students. Discuss the concept of exercise for the brain and explain any topics that may be confusing or that the students may not fully understand. Briefly discuss passive voice used within the context of "to have something done or to get something done". Encourage open student feedback to ensure that all students understand the topic and the main aim. 8 - 10 minutes.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Language clarification: Advance to the next slide and clarify the target language in terms of meaning, pronunciation, and form using a guided-discovery activity. Cover the concepts of passive and active voice and the tenses associated with both. Break down the form of the target sentence strings and have the students identify the language components; verb, adjective and noun. Explain the purpose that the agent serves in passive voice. 8 - 10 minutes.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Advance to the next slide in the deck after language clarification and introduce the multiple choice Google form. Explain the instructions and ask an ICQ to ensure understanding. Divide the students into pairs and send them off to breakout rooms. Monitor students and ensure that they are not struggling with the instructions or the form. After they return, conduct open class feedback to discuss the results of the questions and any issues that they may have encountered. 8 - 10 minutes.

Free Practice (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

For freer practice, advance to the final slide in the deck and show the students the four business cards. Ask them to create a sentence describing what they will have done at one of the businesses. Example: "I am going to have my nails done at the salon." Encourage them to practice using the target language from the 5 ways to exercise the brain. Explain the instructions and ask an ICQ to ensure understanding. Assist students as necessary to elicit a sentence from each one. After freer practice activity, conduct DEC. 5 - 8 minutes.
