Main Aims

  • To review Gerunds (-ing forms) after verbs of liking and disliking

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide speaking practice with a focus on sentence stress and intonation to develop fluency

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (9-9 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. Send Ss (by email / Zoom chat) list of things (in box). Ss to discuss in pairs and answer 2 questions: - which of the things in the list / box do they like? - which do they dislike? Ss to mark each thing with: 5 = I love it / them! 3 = it's ok. I don't mind it / them. 1 = I hate it / /them! Send Ss to zoom breakout rooms in pairs. Ss have 2 minutes. ICQs: How many minutes do you have? 2 minutes Are you working alone? No. In pairs 2. Play audio (Track 11.2) for whole class - Zoom share screen - 5 people talking about how they feel about one of the things in the first exercise. Ss listen as a class. As they listen Ss think about: - what are they talking about? - do they like / dislike it? Activity time: 2 minutes. Open Class Feedback: elicit answers from individual Ss after listening.to text (highlight examples of target language) - 2 minutes

Clarification (11-11 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

1.Cover Meaning, Form and Pronunciation of the language. (see SB p 154 for language analysis) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Gerund (-ing form): verb+ing = noun / pronoun: - subject; or - object of verb; or - object of preposition [Note: I'm going to buy ... (is not a gerund but a form to indicate future intention) Do as a class on Google Slides - (Zoom share screen). Controlled Practice (13-13 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

1. Send Ss gap-fill exercise (by email / Zoom chat - attached file) to complete individually. 3 minutes ICQs: How many minutes do you have? 3 minutes Will you work alone or in pairs? alone What will you be doing? completing the sentences / fill-in the gaps 2. Send Ss to breakout rooms to compare answers to gap-fill activity - 2 minutes. 3. OCFB - elicit answers from individual Ss.

Freer Practice (12-12 minutes) • To provide students with freer practice of the target language

1. Ss make sentences about their own likes and dislikes using the correct phrases for likes and dislikes, and compare their opinions in pairs. Try to think of some unusual likes and dislikes. Classmate can ask why / why not. Example: "I enjoy walking." "Why?" "Because it's very relaxing." Activity time: 5 minutes Send Ss to breakout rooms. Elicit some sentences from individual Ss. 2. Feedback and Delayed Error Correction Provide Ss with feedback on language based on your monitoring of the task. T highlights areas of grammar, lexis, pronunciation, appropriacy.(both accurate and inaccurate)
