Pre-Intermediate level

Materials

No materials added to this plan yet.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice and clarification in the context of asking for and sharing information about personal information, jobs and hobbies

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy using for and since in the context of asking for and sharing information about themselves or others they are getting to know

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher will begin by sharing a brief personal anecdote with key sentences typed into the chat box related to the lesson topic. The story will be about how long the teacher has lived in their current location using both for and since. The students will then discuss a question related to the story about how long they've lived in their current location.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Students will start with a brief exercise to check their understanding. The Google form will be shared on the screen, students will read over it, then they will receive the link to the Google form: https://forms.gle/abLWz3jn6qBXXEoc6 to complete individually. They will have 5 minutes to complete this. The teacher will clarify if the answers are correct or incorrect only without explanation.

Teach (8-10 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

The teacher will use Google Slides 2, 3 & 4: The screen will be shared and the discussion will begin with an analysis and concept questions related to a brief 2 line dialogue, using students to read and discuss the content: How long have you studied French? I’ve studied it for about 12 years. Since I was 20 years old. CCQ's will be posed to check understanding of the context, then form will be covered. The next model sentence: SHE HAS STUDIED FRENCH FOR 20 YEARS will be discussed asking how to form this: (answer): I/you/we/they + have + verb in past participle + for/since + time period/year/month/day Next we will discuss what happens if we change it to “HE”, using the same sentence. ANSWER: He has studied French for 20 years. And 20 years ago is when? Now it’s 2020? What year is 20 years ago (2000) (student?) Students will be asked to answer how long he has studied French using both for and since. The final phase is pronunciation. An audio will be played and stopped periodically for listen and repeat. If there is time, the teacher will dictate two more sentences using the same rhythm.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

CONTROLLED PRACTICE TEST 2 --- 10 minutes Students will complete the next work sheet, reading it silently to check for understanding.: https://forms.gle/SrJRpvg9gXZ693M46 They will have 3 minutes to fill out their answers individually. After, they will be split into pairs/groups for 3 minutes to check their answers, then we will come back for any questions remaining for 4 minutes. Here is the link: https://forms.gle/SrJRpvg9gXZ693M46 (STUDENT) what do we have to do? How long do we have? Okay, go ahead!

Free practice (6-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will use the same (corrected) questions from the Controlled practice, interviewing your partner/group. They will take turns asking and answering questions for 5 minutes, then we will come back to share our answers and close off the lesson. https://forms.gle/W4Mmuqp3hpFDE97V6
