Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of video games, downloading music for free and cosmetic surgeries.
  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about dealing with opinions in the context of discussions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The context of this lesson are discussions about video games, downloading music for free and cosmetic surgeries. Students will predict the topic from pictures on a Jamboard. They will work in groups in Break Out rooms at first, then I will nominate students to give feedback on their ideas. Prediction task: 2 min Feedback: max. 2 min

Exposure (10-12 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ss will listen to 3 discussions with different topics. The first listening task is for gist only and Ss will decide individually who agrees, partially agress and disagrees on those topics: 1. NEW LAW TO LIMIT VIOLENCE IN VIDEO GAMES - John partially agrees, Ellie agrees 2. DOWNLOADING MUSIC FOR FREE IS OK - John disagrees, Ellie agrees 3. COSMETIC SURGERY - John agrees, Ellie disagrees. After that I will nominate Ss to give Feedback. The second listening task is for specific information and Ss will indivudually write down one reason each person says to defend their point of view. Possible answers: 1. JOHN: USE UP ENERGY, KIDS CAN SEPERATE REAL LIFE FROM GAMES 2. ELLIE: IT'S A THEFT, FINED ABOUT 1,5 MILLION USD JOHN: MUSICIANS GET LITTLE MONEY FROM CD SALES AND DOWNLOADS, THEY GET KNOWN, MAKE MONEY FROM CONCERTS 3. ELLIE: DANGEROUS, COULDN'T SMILE OR FROWN, TOO MUCH OF A RISK JOHN: HELP THEIR SELF-ESTEEM, SERIOUS HEALTH PROBLEMS 1. Listening: 4 min Feedback: 1 min 2. Listening: 4 min Pair-check: 1 min Feedback: 2 min

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ss will discover Meaning, Form and Appropriacy through a task. They will work in Break Out rooms to answer these questions: 1. WHAT DO WE EXPRESS WITH THE FOLLOWING SENTENCES? I agree to a certain extent, but ... - PARTIALLY AGREEING I'm in favour of it. - GIVING OPINIONS I'm still not convinced. - DISAGREEING That makes sense. - AGREEING 2. WHICH ONE IS CORRECT? - I'M IN FAVOR OF DOWNLOADING MUSIC FOR FREE. 3. I'm still not CONVINCE or CONVICED? - WE USE THE ADJECTIVE CONVINCED 4. What is MORE POLITE to say? I don't agree at all. You're completely wrong. / I SEE YOUR POINT, BUT I WOULD NOT DO IT THAT WAY. Then, I will nominate Ss to to compare answers. If necessary, I will include choral and individual drilling of the phrases. Task: 4 min Feedback: 2-4 min Drilling: 2 min

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss wiill work in Break Out rooms to unjumble sentences into the correct order: (Example: 1. JOHN: I / banning smoking / all public places. / favour I AM IN FAVOUR OF BANNING SMOKING IN ALL PUBLIC PLACES. ) 2. ELLIE: think / Actually, / be free to choose. / should / people ATUALLY, I THINK PEOPLE SHOULD BE FREE TO CHOOSE. 3. JOHN: but what about / Fair enough, / other people? / rights FAIR ENOUGH, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE RIGHTS OF OTHER PEOPLE? 4. For the freer practice I will aks Ss to choose 2 of the 4 topics that we have dealt with troughout the lesson (video games, downloading music for free, cosmetic surgeries and smoking ban) and to discuss. I will provide them with expressions they will include in their discussions: - I'm really against it. - I'm in favour of - Fair enough, but - I agree to a certain extent, but... - I see your point, but... - Good point. - That makes sense. - I see what you mean. - I'm still not convinced. - I'm not sure about that. - Actually I think - I totally disagree. - Maybe you'd better think again. When monitoring the freer practice, I will make notes on correct and incorrect formulations. For the feedback I will nominate Ss. If necessary, I will correct mistakes.
