Description

This lesson focuses on reading and reading for detailed information. The students will learn about the 12 star signs. This activity is followed by a reading for gist and reading for detailed information activity. The lesson finishes with a speaking activity about the concept of horoscopes where students can try to use some of the newly learnt lexis.

Main Aims

  • The main aim of this lesson is to engage the students in 3 reading skills in the context of horoscopes. The skills that will be practices are reading-for-gist, scanning for information and reading for detailed information.

Subsidiary Aims

  • The sub-aim of this lesson is to teach the students vocabulary related to the context horoscopes, such as 'waste of time', 'prediction', 'secret police' and 'application form'

Procedure

Star Signs (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students, to make them familiar with the English names of the star signs

- t projects star signs on board - elicits the word 'horoscope' and 'star sign' star sign: - t points at pictures CCQ's - What are these? > Star Signs - Do we find them in the sky? > Yes - Does it say something about my birthday? >> yes - Does it say something about my character? >> yes horoscope: - Where can we read something about our star signs? >> newspaper - Can we read it everyday? >> yes - Does it say something about my future? >> yes - t gives each student a slip with a star sign on it - t gives instructions: Come to the board. Stick your paper slip under or next to the right picture. If you don't know, stick it here (t. points to right of board) ICQ: Where do you put the slips? > to the picture When you are unsure, do you stick it here? > Yes - wc comes to the board and try to match slips to pictures - WCFB about their birthdays

Pre-Reading Speaking Activity 'What's your opinion on horoscopes?' (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- t gives a handout with 3 questions to the topic - t gives instructions Work in pairs. While-Reading/Listening #1 - Reading for Gist (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist

- t gives instructions I am going to give you a handout. Fold it here. - t demonstrates it - ss read instruction - t gives instructions You have 1 min 30 sec. Read the text quickly. Choose a good title. ICQ - Do you read the text slowly? > No! - Do you check every word? > No! - Do you read the text quickly? > Yes - Do you find a good title? > Yes? - ss read indiviually once - ss do exercise 2 'choose the correct title' - peer checking

While-Reading/Listening #2 - Scanning and Reading for Information (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading task

Exercise No. 3 (if no time, drop it!) - t divides class in students A and students B - ss A are responsible for paragraph 2 - ss B are responsible for paragraph 3 - t gives instructions: Group A, look at paragraph 1. Group B, look at paragraph 2. The first letter of the word is missing. Try to find the correct letter ICQ: Group A: Do you look at paragraph 1? > Yes Group B: Do you look at paragraph 2? > Yes - ss do ex. 2 - ss A check with other ss A/ ss B check with students B - T gives instructions Check with the person next to you. Exercise No. 4 - t gives instruction Look at Ex. 4 Read the article again Then look at Ex. 4. Find the missing words in the text. Fill them in the gaps. ICQ: Do you read the article quickly? > No Do you read the article carefully? > Yes Do you find words in the text? > Yes Do you write them down in the gaps? > Yes - ss do peer checking - WCFB

Post-Reading Speaking Activity (8-10 minutes) • Find someone who-activity to practice speaking and some of the lessons lexis

- t demonstrates the activity: Holds handout in his hand. Walks around in class Asks different student different questions. If a student says yes, t writes name in field - t gives instructions Get up! Walk around in the classroom. Ask your friends. If the answer is 'yes' write it in the field.
