TP5-Listening
Upper Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will practice the receptive skill of listening. First, they will be presented with a lead-in activity in order to get interested and introduced to the topic/context of the lesson. The instructor will then proceed with language clarification in order to better prepare students for the material of the lesson. Students will then be given a gist task to check for general understanding. After that, students will be given a detail task with the same listening audio podcast. Finally, students will be given a post-task in order to practice speaking skills in the context of the lesson.

Materials

Abc SpeakOut 2nd Edition

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about Iceland in the context of travel.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of travel.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T welcomes Ss and quickly introduces the topic of the lesson. T asks Ss to work in pairs via Zoom breakout rooms and discuss for 2 minutes. Discussion question: "What is your favorite travel destination? Why? Give reasons." T monitors breakout rooms while Ss discuss. T conducts OCFB and Ss share their pair work discussions with the class.

Pre-Listening (Language Clarification) (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T sends Ss a Google Slides in which Ss are asked to work on 2 slides each individually for 4 minutes. Slides offer a self-guided discovery task for Meaning, Form, and Pronunciation. T monitors while Ss are working on the slides. Ss report their answers in OCFB and T corrects any mistakes made in order to clarify MFP. CCQs for meaning: If someone is willing, do they have an obligation? (no) Can an asset be undesirable? (no) T drills pronunciation of each word with Ss as a whole class.

While-Listening #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging gist listening task

T sends Ss a Google Form and instructs Ss that they will hear a 3 minute audio and will need to answer the question in the Google Form. Ss listen to the 3 minute audio. T gives Ss 1 minute to answer the question. T sends Ss to Zoom breakout rooms in order to discuss their answers in pairs for 1 minute. T monitors discussions. Ss discuss their answers in OCFB with T's corrections.

While-Listening #2 (8-12 minutes) • To provide students with a more challenging detailed listening task

T sends Ss a Google Form and tells Ss they will listen to the 3 minute recording again and answer 6 true/false questions. Ss listen to the recording and have 2 minutes to answer the questions. T sends Ss to Zoom breakout rooms where they discuss their answers in pairs for 3 minutes and are asked to attempt to turn false answers into true answers. T monitors in case audio needs to be replayed before OCFB. T conducts OCFB where Ss report the correct answers.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T asks Ss to discuss the following question in pairs: "Do you like the idea of an organised holiday, or do you prefer an independent trip which you design yourself? Why? Give examples of trips you have taken or trips you would like to take." Ss discuss in Zoom breakout rooms for 3 minutes while T monitors. Ss report their discussions in OCFB. T asks Ss if they have any questions and conducts DEC.
