Main Aims

  • to have a listening practice concerning a radio programme about the problems of a hotel

Subsidiary Aims

  • to give sts freer speaking practise to help their spoken fluency

Procedure

Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask the students to look at the photo and elicit some information about the photo. I will explain them the hotel is in Brighton in the south of England. I will ask them to imagine that they are staying there. I will elicit reasons with these questions: Do you think it will be a nice hotel? Would you like to stay there?

Pre-Listening (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Before the listeningpractice, I will get the students to brainstorm in pairs at least 5 things that could go wrong while staying at a hotel or what makes a hotel bad. I will get WCFB and write up some of their ideas.

While-Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with a specific information listening task

I will tell the students that they are going to listen to a part of a radio programme in which two people stay at this hotel. I will tell them that the two people had some problems and I will write 6 problems on WB. I will ask the students to find 3 of them while listening by putting a tick near them. After listening, they will check in pairs. I will do WC FB.

While-Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with a more challenging listening task

I will tell the students that they will listen to the audio again. I will project 7 events on the WB and tell the students that this time they will listen and put the sentences in order. The students will listen to it and then they check in pairs. I will re-play the audio if necessary. Finally I will do WC FB.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I will try and get the sts to remember the story. To help them with this, I will brainstorm key words together like: arrive - check-in, lift not working, room, cold shower, go to cinema, come back, ring the door, no answer, another hotel, back to the same hotel, argue with the manager. I will project them on the WB. Then in pairs sts try and retell the story. At the end I will get some FB.
