Materials

Abc Student Coursebook

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in Informal story telling in the context of Past event

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of language used for Informal stories in the context of Past events

Procedure

Lead-in/Exposure (10-11 minutes) • To set lesson context, engage students, and expose to target language

Send link in chat and share screen to Jamboard with example using myself of introducing myself. Ask students to repeat what I modelled by Briefly saying their name, where they are from, and one sentence of something that happened yesterday.

Useful Language (14-15 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Highlight good language use from intro sentences that used Past Simple, Past Continuous, connectors, or lexis. Say: We are going to practice telling informal stories today. In telling a story to a friend, we need this language. Send link to Language Form in chat. Say: click on the link in the chat. This is a quiz to help you discover some useful language for telling and responding to a story from a friend. Take 8 minutes to work on the quiz and then we will go through it together. If you need help or have a question then you can ask it in the chat or unmute your mic and say it. After 8 minutes say: Okay. Let's go through the quiz together. Go through quiz. Share screen of MFPA slides highlighting "A funny thing happened...", "So, anyway...", "You're joking!"

Productive Task(s) (12-13 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Say: Now you are going to use the language we have looked at to tell a story to a classmate. I'm going to send you in pairs to breakout rooms where you will have 10 minutes to tell a story starting with, "A funny thing happened..." "So, anyway..." and your partner responding with "You're joking!" Send link to Productive task Form to chat. Say: In the chat is a Form to help you form and tell your story using the language we looked at. If it helps you to write it first, there is a space where you can type, but remember you only have 10 minutes for both of you to tell your story using the language we looked at. So please keep your stories short. I will be coming into your breakout room to listen, but you are always welcome to ask me questions or for help. Send students in pairs to breakout rooms for 10 minutes. (((Listen to language used in breakout rooms for Feedback)))

Feedback and Error Correction (5-6 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Highlight good language used in breakout rooms with productive task. Highlight language for correction/reformulation. Ask students how they would correct or say it differently.
