Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide practice and clarification of the simple past and the past progressive in the context of an interrupted action or when the action stopped at a key point in the past.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency using the simple past and past progressive in the context of telling a childhood story where something happened to interrupt your happiness.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The T will screen share a google slide. The T will ask the Ss to choose a yellow box to type their answer to the two questions into. The T will give a demo of this as she is giving instructions. The T will share the link to the slide through the public chat box: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1TdN81VHIUXMf7sxMuWoNzMSh3Aey0fGNnwYGTQvBolo/edit?usp=sharing The T will give the Ss 2 minutes to write their answers into the yellow boxes. As the Ss are typing their answers, the T will read some of their answers aloud.

Text work (7-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language. The purpose is for students to identify the TL.

The T will screen share the google form. The T will give a demo. The T will share the link to the the google form: https://forms.gle/ssGoDjaZoDcCaSFU7 The T will give the Ss 5 minutes to complete the activity. The Ss will work individually. The T will go over the results with the Ss.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The T will screen share google slide 1. The T will ask questions 1-4 and send them through the public chat box as well. The will ask the Ss to type their answers to the following questions into the public chat box. " In both of these sentences 1. Did the situation begin in the past ? Yes. 2. Did the situation end in the past ? Yes. 3. Has the event finished ? Yes. " The T will then uncover the timeline. The T will ask the Ss: 4. " What tense are all of these sentences in ?" Simple Past. The T will screen share google slide 2. The T will ask questions 1-3 below, and send them through the public chat box as well. The will ask the Ss to type their answers to the following questions into the public chat box. " In both of these sentences 1. Was the activity happening/occurring in the past ? Yes. 2. Was the activity happening at the same time as another past action ? Yes. The T will then uncover the timeline. The T will ask the Ss : 3. " What tense are both of these sentences in ?" Past Progressive. The T will screen scare slide 3. The T will ask : 1. What tense are all 3 sentences here ? Simple Past. 2. Look at the green highlighted words. How is the simple past formed ? Verb + ed 3. What word can go before the simple past ? When The T will screen scare slide 4. The T will ask : 1. What tense are both sentences here ? Past Progressive. 2. Look at the red highlighted words. How is the past progressive formed ? was/were + verb -ing . 3. What word can go before the past progressive ? While. The T will screen scare slide 5. The T will ask the Ss to fill in the red gaps with past progressive. The T will ask the Ss to send their answers through the public chat box. The T will ask : 1. What happened first "She was coming to visit me" or "the car broke down" ? She was coming to visit me 2. What happened second "She was coming to visit me" or "the car broke down" ? the car broke down 3. What happened first "They were walking to the gym" or "she dropped her wallet" ? They were walking to the gym 4. What happened second "They were walking to the gym" or "she dropped her wallet" ? she dropped her wallet. The T will screen scare slide 6. The T will ask the Ss to fill in the green gaps with simple past. The T will ask the Ss to send their answers through the public chat box. 1. What happened first "She was turning the lights off" or "her mom walked into the house" ? She was turning the lights off 2. What happened second "She was turning the lights off" or "her mom walked into the house" ? her mom walked into the house The T will screen scare slide 7. The T will say "was sleeping." The T will ask the Ss: 1. Do you hear linking when I say "was sleeping" ? Yes. 2. Where do you hear the linking when I say "was sleeping" ? between was and sleeping. Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice. The purpose is accuracy.

The T will screen share google form. The T will give a demo as she is giving instructions. The T will share the link through the public chat box : https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1Z-zpjHXN11aRfbFC6PUVegMyW4MuxmpIKr25v7oKlhc/edit?usp=sharing The T will give the Ss 4 minutes to complete the Gap-Fill form. The T will put the Ss into groups and have them compare answers through the private chat box. They will have 2 minutes to compare answers. We will go over the results together as a class.

Free Practice (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language. The purpose is fluency.

The T will screen share the google slide. The T will ask the Ss to start thinking " of a story when you were a happy child, but then something happened that made you sad or mad." The T will remind the Ss to use the simple past and past progressive when telling their stories. The T will share a story, then send them to Breakout Rooms. The T will send the prompt through the public chat box. The Ss will have 6 minutes to share stories.
