Description

In this lesson, students will learn Functions on how to give suggestions through guided discovery based on a gist reading task. The lesson starts with a Lead-In where students have to give suggestions on what should anyone do when visiting their country/city. This is followed by a gist reading task. Then, a controlled practice on meaning, form, pronunciation, and appropriacy. Finally, students will be part of a role-play.

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a role play in the context of daily life

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- T will share the screen with Ss (1 min) - T will show a Google Slide with the following question: What should I do when visiting your city? - T asks: 1. Okay, guys so do you have to discuss on breakout rooms or by private message? 2. Is it a speaking or a writing activity? - Ss discuss in breakout rooms (2 mins) - T monitors breakout rooms - T nominates 2 students to give their answers (1 min)

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

- T shares the screen to show the activity to the Ss - T explains the activity: Ss have to read the conversation and select the best option that summarized the conversation. - T sets time (2 mins) - T asks ICQ: 1. Guys do you have 3 or 2 minutes? 2. So do you have to choose the best summary or a title for the conversation? - T sends the Google Slide's link - Ss work on the task - Ss work on private chat to send their answers. (1 min) - Feedback: T nominates Ss to give the correct answers (2 mins)

Clarification (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- T shares screen with ss - T covers meaning eliciting the meaning from the students: SHOULD 1. Is she giving an option or is it an obligation? Option 2. Does it sound like a formal or informal suggestion? informal 3. Is ‘should’ an auxiliary verb or a verb? Auxiliary verb I SUGGEST 1. Is this a soft recommendation or a strong recommendation? Soft 2. Controlled Practice (7-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

- T will shares her screen with students (1 min) - T will explain to students that they have to select the correct answer from the multiple-choice exercise. - T makes the first exercise with them. - T sets time ( 4 minutes) - T asks: 1. Guys, do you have to select the correct answer or write the correct answer? 2. Do you have 4 or 5 minutes to work on this exercise? - T sends link - Ss work on the exercise - Ss work on private chat to send their answers to a partner (1 min) - Feedback: T nominates students to give the answers to her (2 min)

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

- T shares screen with students - T explains that they are going to be sent to breakout rooms where they are going to be part of a role-play (3 mins) - T assigns students (Student A or B) - T gives a little demonstration by herself on how to work on the role play - Ss work on breakout rooms - T nominates Ss to give their answers (1 min) - T conducts Feedback and DEC (2 min) - T conducts DEC (4 min)
