Description

In this lesson, students learn about question words through a trivia quiz. The lesson starts with a lead-in about trivia. Then, students listen to a quiz about sports trivia, answer some questions and identify the target language. Finally there is some controlled practice based on some reordering sentences and gap-fill exercises, and a free practice discussion.

  • By the end of the lesson, learners will have revised and practised question forms

Subsidiary Aims

  • Learners will also have practised their speaking for fluency in the post-task discussion about their habits and lifestyle

Procedure

Setting Context Lead-in (3-3 minutes) • To contextualise the lesson

T displays photos of trivia quizzes and asks learners: Are you familiar with these games? Do you have games like this is Mexico? Aim: elicit Sports trivia and quiz pp. Slide 1,2 T asks Ss to predict the answers (in groups) to the quiz. (in breakout rooms)

Text work Gist and Intensive Task (8-8 minutes) • To get students to 'identify' and notice the target language

T asks students to listen to the quiz in pairs/groups and find out whether their predictions were correct. Listen and answer the 10 questions you hear. Students check in pairs. (in breakout rooms) pp.slide 2 T conducts OCFB and shows answers * if necessary pp. slide 3 T asks Ss What words/ language is the quiz focusing on? Elicit: Question words pp.slide 2

Language Clarification M, F, P (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T asks Ss question on Slide 4 to focus on Questions (M) When do we use these kinds of questions? For specific information. T demos Jamboard task: match question word with function T conducts OCFB (F) T checks students know how to make questions: Do you remember how to make questions? elicits S- V inversion in sentences with verb 'to be' and use of do in other sentences pp. 5, 6 T moves on to word order in questions: Now we are going to look at word order in sentences with question words pp. 6,7 Students fill in chart to focus on form (object questions) T shows answers T elicits focus on subject (subject questions) p.p 8 (P) T displays the sentences on a slide. T demos pronunciation and asks about stress and intonation p.p slides 10,11

Controlled Practice (8-8 minutes) • To get students to practice the language for accuracy

T asks Ss to complete questions individually. T demos the first one. On google forms and pp. 12. T conducts OCFB and shows answers pp. 13

Free Practice (8-8 minutes) • To get students to practice the language for fluency

T asks Ss to get in pairs or (groups of 3) to ask their partner 3 questions about their habits and lifestyle. Ss must use Question Words and find out information about their partner. ICQs Are you writing or speaking? Speaking Any kind of questions? No, questions with Question words. Are you going to talk to me about yourself or someone else? T demos activity. What is your favourite film? ... Why? Davide likes .... pp. slide 14 (in breakout rooms) T conducts OCFB
