Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about job advertisement and application letter in the context of dream jobs.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation,debate in the context of dream jobs and qualifications needed for it .

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students.

Ask them to remember their their dream jobs. Short discussion about job by looking at an image. (Chart) Show the pictures of a dream island and discuss if they want to work in a place like that. Why/Why not? F/B

Pre-Reading (7-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Elicit or pre-teach words 'qualification', 'requirement', 'candidate', 'species'. Give definitions if necessary. Ask CCQs. Qualification-Is it about abilities or disabilities? Do you write them to your cv's? Requirement- Do job advertisements have them? Do they ask for the qualifications? Candidate- Is it a person who is waiting for a job or a person who is already working? Species- Is it about living things or films? Are they group of similar or different animals/plant? Drill and write them on the board.

While-Reading (6-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading task.

Ask ss to look at 'Wanted: Paradise island caretaker' text on page 49. Give the hand-out. Ss read it for a gist -about 30 seconds-. Ask 'What is the job?'. Then ask them to look at the question and aswer quesiton 1 by scanning. Answer the first question and for the second question , tell them to explain it to their partners. Finally WC F/B.

While-Reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading task.

Ask ss to read covering letter in exercise 9A P.49 for details. Give the hand-out and instructions and ICQ. Ss try to answer :'Do you think this person would be good for the job? Discuss Why/ why not?' Give some time and monitor. Ask them tell it to their partners. Then WC F/B.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask ss 'Is the wording of the letter formal or informal?'.Give some time to read for details. They find examples of expressions of formal writing.F/B. Reflect the page on whiteboard. Give them cut-ups and ask them to match expressions with the same meanings. Ss come to board and stick them to the right place.(F/B)

Speaking (5-6 minutes) • To provide students chance of speaking on the subject

Ask ss to tell about their dream jobs to their partners. What qualifications do they need in order to get these jobs? Give examples. They work in pairs. Then ask each of them to talk about his/her partner's dream job. WC F/B.
